### Issue with Rakuten NISA Account Closure
Thanks to this wonderful sub I was able to figure out Rakuten’s website and invest in a NISA through them, only to get an email today saying that I have a pre-existing account, so my account with them is being forcibly closed.
Except…I don’t have a pre-existing account. They’re the first place I have ever tried to open one.
I contacted customer service but all they said was “that was the result of the tax audit. You can sell your stuff to get your money back in three days after we change your account over from NISA to general.”
Is there any way to find where this mysterious NISA that I never actually opened is?

It means they asked the NTA whether they could open a NISA account for you and the NTA said: no, this person already has one. The NTA won’t have told Rakuten where your existing NISA account is.
The solution is to go to your local NTA office and tell them you need to find your NISA account. There is a form they will give you that you can fill in and they will send it to the financial institution that has your NISA account. The financial institution is then supposed to contact you immediately to let you know that they have your NISA account.
It is also possible to check the location of your NISA account using the e-Tax interface, but unless you are already set up for using e-Tax, that may not be the most convenient method. Either way, [this site](https://nisa-ideco-soudan.ashitaba-mirai.jp/2023/09/15/nisa_kakunin/) provides instructions for both options.
just a conjecture: check your bank whether you had NISA with your bank?
They refused due to finding your name in the system, or your email address?
If the latter, maybe the “forgot your password” reset button may help. Go through your emails (all addresses if you have several) keyword “NISA” and search.
When talking to customer service, couldn’t they give you any information, date etc… ?
If the issue is with Rakuten, go with SBI or any other providers. You can’t normally change your provider throughout the year but I wonder if it counts in your case, given that they’ll refund you.
It’s possible you’ve been a victim of identity theft and someone is using your potentially compromised zairyu card to open bank accounts/broker accounts (and potentially other things such as credit cards etc).
Maybe consider getting a credit check to see if anything flags up on it?
In case it helps I had the same experience and am very confused.
I will try and follow the steps provided to find my Nisa I never knew I had.
