Allegations Against Local Business Owner

SULPHUR, La. (KPLC) – A local business owner is accused of stealing nearly $100,000 in federal funds issued to small business owners during the COVID pandemic.

Jenilea Pena has been indicted in federal court for wire fraud and falsifying statements.

Pena was one of three owners of Planet Nutrition in Sulphur, owning a 25 percent stake in the business.

The indictment filed in federal court claims Pena filed for a small business loan in 2020 through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (”CARES” Act).

Without the knowledge of the majority owner, Pena allegedly began submitting documents to the Small Business Association (SBA) to apply for the loan, claiming she was doing so on behalf of the other owners and the business.

However, Pena used the $97,000 loan for her own personal use, rather than for the business, the indictment reads.

In order to remain in compliance with SBA for the loan, Pena is accused of submitting a fictitious document she claimed was signed by the majority owner, according to the indictment.

Pena was indicted on March 20, 2024.

She pleaded not guilty, and her bond has been set at $10,000.
