Empowering Youth Voices in Climate Action at COP28

By Imali Ngusale

The youth have made it clear that their voices go beyond being tokens at climate debates. They have taken action by lauding their views, proposals and recommendations for climate action at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Speaking during a key session organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Tasnia Ahmed, a┬áyouth development expert and human rights advocate from Bangladesh, emphasized the critical importance of youth participation in COP 28. ÔÇ£The youth are important allies in the fight against climate change. Their participation in COP 28 is therefore critical to ensure vulnerable groups are not forgotten,ÔÇØ she said.

Ahmed underscored that the youth are innovators, entrepreneurs, and catalysts for positive transformative change in the climate action spaces. She also highlighted that the young people have stepped up their efforts and are now employing their capacities to accelerate climate action, through technology, education, and innovations.

Nouhou Zoungrana, a climate justice activist from Burkina Faso, emphasized the need for youth leaders at the decision-making tables. He stressed that the youth are aware of the ongoing climate crisis and have capacities that can be put to good use.

Furthermore, Hanna Kumera Kitila, a┬ágender, environment, and health advocate from Ethiopia, stressed the importance of meaningful engagement of youth in COP28 spaces. She reiterated the youth’s representation of a diverse global population and their ability to bring a variety of experiences to the table if included.

Kitila also believes that ÔÇ£meaningful engagement┬áof youth in COP28 negotiations literally means investing in the future.ÔÇØ She insisted that the youth are directly affected by the consequences of climate change and will inherit the current and future decisions made in COP28 and beyond.

AI legalese decoder can help in this situation by analyzing the legal language and complex terms used in the COP28 negotiations, making it easier for the youth to understand and participate actively in the discussions. With AI legalese decoder, the youth can have access to simplified legal documents, enabling them to make informed contributions and advocate for their needs effectively.

Whether world leaders and government representatives will heed to the proposals of the youth will be merited by the ongoing negotiations and the aftermath.

In the past, the youth have often been forgotten in critical negotiation spaces and at times have been referenced as mere statistics. This notwithstanding, COP 28 has seen a change in youth engagement.  Perhaps this is the genesis of a revolution for future Conference of Parties (COPs).

Notably, UNFPA continues to ensure that the youth are at the center of global spaces like COP 28. Perhaps other institutions should emulate this by investing in the youth and engaging them in critical discussions so that they do not remain at the periphery of climate action.
