    I was referred to a big tech company in WA by a friend. Increased my Canadian salary by over 3.5 times.

    Warning though: at least for my company, if I were to work remotely in Canada (which is allowed), I’d be taking a Canadian salary, which for the same company/same position would be around 60% less due to taxation, USD strength and geographical pay differences. I imagine other US companies are the same, where if you worked remotely you’d make significantly less than if you worked in the states

    So my recommendation is to work in the states, not remotely in Canada for a US company. Or at least confirm how salary changes if you worked in Canada for their US company.

    I would highly highly recommend moving to the US for the money. It’s definitely worth it. Big companies will most likely handle the work visa situations for you.

    ItÔÇÖs very likely you have to move the US. Most US companies adjust pay according to local labor cost in Canada (usually around 0.5-0.7 of what your US coworkers at the same position get), but overall the adjusted pay and benefits are still usually much better than local companies in Canada.

    I literally just started applying to US based jobs on LinkedIn. At the time, I was working a job in Vancouver that was well below my skill level, so I was looking for a new job anyways. Decided to just see what would happen if I applied to jobs in the US too. Sure enough, I got called back for a few different interviews, and two of them ended in offers.

    Just applied via a website posting for the job, and after nearly a month of interviews I got the job.

    Our company is completely remote, but it is nice to work M-F 9-5 in my pj’s (and a nice shirt for our zoom/meet/teams meetings each day).

    Salary is good, monthly scalable bonuses.

    For people who want to know the easiest way to work in the US. Find a job in Canada for a company that has an American division. Transfer down using the L Visa, this Visa can put you on a path for a green card. After 2-3 years youÔÇÖll get PR and then skyÔÇÖs the limit from there, you can work anywhere.

    Most often, american companies donÔÇÖt want to deal with people who require VisaÔÇÖs unless you are extremely specialized.

    I’m currently working for a US startup with no Canadian entity. They employ me through an Employer of Record (EOR). My salary negotiations are in USD but I am paid the equivalent in CAD through the EOR. If you can find a similar arrangement, its great. I’ve 2.5x my gross wages since doing so. No RRSP matching tho, but I survive.

    Pretty much just apply to jobs like normal (linkedin, etc). Usually they will tell you upfront if they allow remote work in the job listing. A lot of ppl apply to these types of jobs so companies can be picky in who they hire. Working in the US is also pretty straight forward under the TN status, but there is a list of allowed professions and you need a corresponding degree.

    Deel is a great PEO, never any delays with anything and very easy to get chat support.

    There are some terrible PEOs out there too. For example, run far away from Safeguard Global. Most incompetent people I’ve ever dealt with in my career, they don’t even understand basic labour laws (whether for malicious reasons or complete incompetence, I don’t know)

    Got my first one applying via LinkedIn, they sponsored me for a TN visa and let me work mostly remote but had to be in the office one week a month

    Second job just hired me as an employee of record via a shell corp and pays me to work remotely. Took my US salary and converted it to CAD and pay it bi monthly

    I networked with an American company while I was working for my Canadian one. If you just apply as a Canadian it will be very hard. American companies tend to not want to deal with the Visa process, even though TN is very easy, they just donÔÇÖt want the headache.

    I went from 110k CAD to 310k CAD (225k USD).

    Previous job (US company, offices in Canada) – applied directly, got hired, stayed on for more than 5 years.

    Current job (US company, offices in Canada) – they reached out directly, I figured why not try it. About 3.5x-4.5x of the median software dev salary, swayed by stock performance. I choose not to move to US for many reasons, but would probably close to double my take home if I did.

    Before that, many personal projects, various local (Canadian) startups, a series of internships at a well known Canadian tech giant of the time.

    My advice is to get really good at what you do, have clear and obvious ways to prove/demonstrate that expertise, always keep learning, donÔÇÖt be an asshole, and realize that there is basically no ceiling.

    Current work and previous work, both with fairly high standards for hiring, both really struggle to hire locally in Canada, end up hiring remotely/sponsoring immigration. ThereÔÇÖs a very real lack of competent people here – if you can fill that gap, plenty of well paying work (at least in tech).

    unless you have super unique skills no US employer is going to let you work remote in canada.

    you could get a tn sponsorship to move down if you meet the educational requirements for a tn. also you need to have some significant skills. an entry level IT job is not going to cut it.
