The Performance of NZ Markets: Can AI Legalese Decoder Help?

Introduction

The New Zealand markets have been experiencing a prolonged period of poor performance, leading to frustration among investors. Despite being invested in the NZ50 for almost two years, I find myself still in the negatives. While I acknowledge that I entered the market at an unfavorable time and that my investment is intended for the long term (through KiwiSaver), it is disheartening to see that New Zealand is faring comparatively worse than other markets. Moreover, the presence of a 7% inflation rate further exacerbates the reduction in my buying power. Although I lament the missed opportunity to invest in the thriving US equity markets or world stocks, I am determined to stick it out and wait for better times. To alleviate some of the uncertainty and difficulties associated with navigating the legal complexities of the financial market, an AI Legalese Decoder can provide invaluable assistance.

The Current State of NZ Markets

The performance of the New Zealand markets has been less than ideal, causing concern among investors. As a holder of NZ50 funds for nearly two years, I have yet to see a positive return on my investment. Although I am aware that I entered the market at an unfortunate time, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that New Zealand’s market performance is lagging behind other global markets. This discrepancy raises questions about the effectiveness and competitiveness of the NZ markets in current economic conditions.

Impact of Inflation

In addition to the disappointing returns, the impact of inflation is another factor contributing to the decline of my investment’s value. With inflation running at around 7%, my purchasing power is eroding even further. Every dollar I invested in the NZ50 has lost significant value due to the rising cost of goods and services. This further emphasizes the need for a solution or strategy that can help mitigate the negative effects of inflation on my investment portfolio.

Missed Opportunities and Reflection

The frustration intensifies as I reflect on the missed opportunities associated with investing in alternative markets such as the US equity markets or world stocks. Given the thriving nature of these markets, it is disheartening to imagine how my investment could have fared differently had it been allocated there. However, as I grapple with these thoughts, I recognize that dwelling on the past will not change my current situation. Instead, I have chosen to adopt a patient approach, waiting for the tides to turn and for improved conditions within the NZ markets.

When people talk about shared and index funds being long term investment horizons (10+ years) this is why.

You can get sustained periods of dampened or negative growth.

But has your investment horizon changed? Have you had a marriage break up, a new child, a financial windfall, wanting to buy a house?

If not, why have you changed your attitude towards your investment strategy?

Basically IÔÇÖd you were in the NZX for one reason, and the only thing is that after two years your returns arenÔÇÖt great.. weÔÇÖll thatÔÇÖs possibly because economies are slow moving beasts and we run in boom/busy cycles. Who knows where we will be in 5 more years

  • liftyMcLiftFace

Well US was ripping for a little bit but has since come down a lot over the last week. It’s weird times, if it’s kiwisaver then you’re dollar cost averaging so its all good.

  • Gollums-Crusty-Sock

NZX 50 has had some BIG absolute dogs over that time.

A2Milk and Ryman just to name two.

  • ernbeld

If you can take a very long-term outlook then declining fund values (even over a number of years) are actually not necessarily bad… you could see this as a buying opportunity.

See here for an analysis I made a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceNZ/comments/nr0sql/benefits_of_dollarcost_averaging_illustrated/

  • siranysparechange

Put your kiwisaver on a growth fund and forget that it exists, be happy when you retire, no point worrying about something you have no control over

Alternatively move to Aussie and transfer it to their super scheme for a bit more flexibility

  • h0ustigr

Been investing in NZX for 20 years. Lost a bit and learned that the only reliable way (for me) is to DCA in dividend stocks that majority owned by government such as energy companies etc.

  • QuarterGeneral6538

NZ market as a whole seems to be mostly focused on dividends rather than growth. NZX50 has a div yield of 5% while s&p500 is around 1.5%

  • LightningJC

I took almost all of my money out of shares last year when things started to turn south, decided to stick with a decent rate savings account until the world economy stabilises.

With interest rates on the rise IÔÇÖd rather take a guaranteed 5.9% over the next year than risk the market plummeting, should a worldwide recession or war happen.

Will go back into shares when things look more stable.

  • Minimum_Eff0rt99

Have you been DCA into your holding? Has your investment thesis changed? Or did you buy once and just expect free money? Investing in a single company does actually require work and research even after you take a position

  • Technical-Style1646

Where is your kiwisaver held? You can put it to growth or international funds for more exposure to non-non stocks.

That’s what I did and moved away from banks into kernel.

Sp500/growth fund/ world fund is what rocking now.

  • Neither-Media-9703

There are NZ companies like Infratil doing better than the rest

  • Few-Ad-527

Invest in the aus market. Nz is small af

  • Horror-Career-335

Nothing exciting happening/will happen in NZ and the market shows that. Suggest move to US/overseas markets. The only thing thats messy is the FIF tax, which is just annoying imo.
