    If youÔÇÖve not agreed to it, and thereÔÇÖs nothing in your contract about repaying training courses, no itÔÇÖs no legal.

    Ask the company to show where you have specifically agreed to the repayment.

    If they make the deduction go straight to ACAS and report it as an unlawful deduction of wages.

    If all of the above is correct then you’re not liable for the course. I would suggest you ask the company for details of you agreeing to the course repayment.

    As such, any deduction from your final pay will likely be considered an unauthorised deduction, if that happens you need to file an Employment tribunal claim against them. ACAS can help with this.

    This *can* be legal but only in certain situations and only if the employee agrees.

    If nothing in your contract says you agreed to pay the costs if you leave within x months and you made no other agreement to do so, you do not have to pay anything. Report the wage theft as soon as the company try.

    As others have said double check your contract and or any documents you may have been sent in relation to the course. This happened to me and it turns out there was a clause in the contract in relation to training courses.

    Companies will usually have you pay back if you leave within X time.

    Check your contract, there’s usually a clause stating that if you resign within a timescale, you’re liable to pay for said course. Its to prevent employees going on courses, get the qualification & then leaving for a better paid job

    As others have said double check your contract I got stung for a H&S course that they put me on that was of no use to my job at all it only suited them. Then when I handed in my notice the following year they pulled out a clause in the employment contract that meant they could reclaim 2/3 of the cost of the course. (As it tapered)

    The rule at companies I have worked for in the past has been that if you propose to them a training course for yourself then you have to pay it back if you leave within a certain number of months, then the amount you pay back tapers off, upto a year or two when you no longer have to pay anything.

    If however the company decides to send you, or your team, on a course they have found then you don’t have to pay anything back.

    I would be surprised if the company had mandated the course as part of your employment, that you would be responsible for paying them back.

    Check your employment contract and your company handbook if you have one as if there is a clause in either then you will have been seen to agree by signing your contract. Sit down with HR and ask them to show you where you have agreed to repayment of training costs.     IÔÇÖve been on a very expensive course and my employer notified me IÔÇÖd have to repay if leaving in two stages. I had time to disagree but I didnÔÇÖt sign anything explicit like a standalone form with a wet ink signature.

    Carefully check your pre-training course materials to see if they snuck in a clause or condition. Though even then is worth taking advice.

    Where I used to work they put the whole team on a training course but we had to sign that if we left within 6 months of completion then we pay it back

    My partner’s contract *states* he will refund training if he leaves within X number of years, and how much he pays for each amount of years.

    Mine says nothing of the sort and I would pay absolutely fuck all (they want me to be trained in something, that’s a choice *they* made not a skill I asked for).

    If indeed your contract says nothing about it, and you didn’t sign anything to that effect before doing the course, no it is not legal for them to take money off of you
