## Choosing between Vanguard and iShares: Exploring Factors Beyond TER

I have noticed a trend where people often lean towards Vanguard over iShares, despite iShares sometimes offering lower Total Expense Ratios (TER) and a larger number of shares and participations. This raises the question – why is this the case? Is it due to a perception of greater ethical considerations associated with iShares? Or is it simply a matter of inertia, where individuals stick with their initial choice and believe it to be superior to other options?

One possible explanation for this phenomenon could lie in the historical performance and reputation of these companies. If individuals have had a positive experience with iShares in the past, they may be more inclined to continue investing with them, even if Vanguard offers certain advantages in terms of diversity and cost-effectiveness.

MSCI World is misleading – it refers to a benchmark index of developed markets and the fund you’ve linked has 1482 holdings

FTSE all-world has more than double the holdings because it includes emerging markets in addition to developed. It costs marginally more. [This fund](https://www.justetf.com/en/etf-profile.html?isin=IE00B3YLTY66) is a better comparison and yes, it is 5 basis points cheaper (in theory)

Vanguard are very popular in the US, iShares (Blackrock) are the biggest asset manager in the world, and have a bigger footprint in Europe.

Both are trustworthy and safe options, you should not choose one over the other just because Reddit is mostly US centric.

TER, TD (and TD trend), AUM (and AUM trend), usage of profits, replication method, and domicile are much more interesting considerations when choosing an ETF.

    I think it’s because

    1) Vanguard invests in FTSE, the index is a little different from MSCI. I think the main reason people prefer FTSE is that it covers 90% (vs 85% in MSCI) of the investible market, so including some companies that could be defined as “small cap”. This also means they have a higher number of holdings.

For comparison, VWCE has around 3600 holdings while IUSQ sits at about 1700.

    2) I think the tracking difference of Vanguard is a little better.

When it comes to mutual funds (not ETF), Vanguard has the advantage of offering “switch transfers” where they move your investment from one of their funds to another within seconds, while other funds take a few days to liquidate your holdings and another few days to realize the purchase of the new one.

What exactly are you comparing? Vanguard ftse all world vs ishares msci world?

Vanguard platform is one of the best in the UK, especially when starting. And the funds are great too.

If you want iShares you need to go to a worse off platform to get them, and probably pay more platform fees in return.

That’s one more reason I haven’t seen mentioned.
