    Call TD and tell them you don’t have insurance and you don’t have income to pay. See what they say. Might be they can reduce the amount or let you pay small installments.

    Or don’t, and see if they sue you for it.

    2. The modification was not done by a professional (plumber), nor it was signed or approved by one.

    3. No insurance.

    It will be extremely hard for you to try and claim you’re not solely and fully responsible for the damages.

    Renters insurance is only around $20-$30 a month, get it asap. You are gonna have to pay insurance company, you can probably get a payment plan with them, and pick up a second job

    While it’s a mistake, it sounds like the landlord was made whole and the insurer is going after you personally.

    Realistically will TD launch litigation to obtain a court order for those funds? That’s anyone’s guess, but both sides will need to realize that you can’t really squeeze blood from a stone.

    If I were you I would just tell TD that I have no money or insurance and see what happens. They might just drop it then and there.

    What kind of bidet was it? I can’t see the kinds that attach on to a toilet to be able to cause that much damage unless you left it for a long time (by pipe I’m not sure if you mean an actual pipe, or the water line to an attachment). Assuming it was an actual pipe and the damage is real, you don’t have much options.

    For starters, tenant insurance is something you should have. A lot of places don’t let you rent without it. For your current predicament maybe talk with your landlord and see if you can work something out. I would also suggest looking at your current budget and seeing what you can cut out. $1950 when you only take home $2000 is living way too close to the edge. I understand in many cases we can’t save as much as we would like, but if you only have a $50 cushion after paying your needs, we should try to cut that down a bit.

    How on earth was a bidet a priority if, as you say, out of your 2,000$/month, 1950 is living expenses ?
    Just don’t see this happening. I am left with 50$ at the end of the month and all I can think of is: “I need a bidet” ?

    To everyone piling on OP, this is also on the landlord and a lesson for them. As a landlord myself I require all tenants to have their own tenant insurance. It’s in the lease and they have to show proof of coverage before they move in.Many people, especially newcomers to Canada and young or low-income people don’t understand why tenant’s insurance is important and that it is low cost, and it is in a landlord’s best interest to require it.

    The insurance company is just doing its due diligence trying to recover funds from the responsible party but if you don’t pay it just becomes a claim on the landlord’s insurance and increases their premiums. The insurance company and/or the landlord could sue you for the money but at your income level they would be idiots to do so. You should probably be looking to find another place to live though as this is certainly grounds for eviction.

    There is no way “out” of those for you, YOU caused the damaged with an appliance YOU brought into the house and altered the plumbing to use. Pay up, or you can kiss goodbye being able to get any other apartments.

    It’s unfathomable to me that you didn’t/don’t have renters insurance.

    You never should have altered the landlord’s property. And you should never rent without paying for rental insurance.

    However the only institution that can force you to pay that bill the landlord received is by an order from the LTB.
