Financial Overview and Concerns

I currently have the following debt:
– $8000 in credit card debt
– $12,000 in personal loan from a previous consolidation
– $19,000 car loan
– Mortgage of $115,000 (property purchased in 2020 for $123,000)

My income is $50,000 before tax, and my wife lost her job back in March. Her employment insurance (EI) benefits have run out, and I am concerned about our financial situation. With the debt-to-income ratio being out of balance, I am unsure if banks would consider reconsolidation options. Additionally, I am wondering if bankruptcy or a consumer proposal is a viable solution. I am also worried about how these financial decisions might affect my wife, who obtained her permanent residency in 2021.

Your wife needs a job, any job and she cannot be picky. You probably needs an extra part time job too. Budgt and cut down on anything that is not necessary

  • Randomredditor416

I don’t think that is insurmountable at all. Something will eventually come up for your wife. Even if it is a lower paying one at Tim’s for example, that alone would provide big relief to your finances. And like the other poster said, try to tailor her resume to the job or add a little note to somehow personalize it. Keep in mind depending on the job there may be a couple hundred resumes and anything you can do to help it stand out among the others will pay off.

Bankruptcy / consumer proposal should be an absolute last resort when there are no other options. I’ve been there and despite the relief, it’s not fun!

If your wife is capable of working, she needs to get a job asap even if it’s something she doesn’t want to do.

Your amount of debt is not insurmountable. Even a minimum wage job would provide enough to tackle the debt.

    Good luck!

Whether a bankruptcy or a consumer proposal should be filed in your situation will depend on the following factors:

First, in Alberta, if the equity in your home is $40,000 or less, it is exempt from realization during bankruptcy. And from the details of your post, it appears the equity in your home is below that threshold. However, any increase in the equity during your bankruptcy would have to be realized upon by the Licensed Insolvency Trustee. In contrast, a consumer proposal doesn’t affect your assets.

Second, you cannot sponsor someone to immigrate to Canada between the date you file bankruptcy and the date you’re discharged from bankruptcy. This prohibition doesn’t apply in the case of a consumer proposal. The last sentence of your post doesn’t make it very clear what your wife’s immigration status is.

    Good luck ƒñ×

I wouldn’t worry too much, guessing your mortgage payment is only 700$ ish a month? If your wife can get any job, even Mc Donald’s, pump gas, ect.or something to tide you over until she finds something better you should be alright. Pay off the cc as soon as you can just live a solitary life for a few months eat ramen, rice and some cheap cuts of meat.

  • No-Construction6435

You owe $154k total thatÔÇÖs nothing for 50k. Put all the loans together or see if you can appraise and refinance the house for the whole amount. One payment and done.

  • c0ntra

I’m sorry but, you apparently had a previous debt problem, got a loan to consolidate it all so it was manageable, then did what you’re not supposed to do and went into debt for a $19,000 car, and spent $8000 on credit you didn’t have. What’s the point of a consumer proposal if you’re just going to end up in the same boat eventually and maybe lose the house?

You need to kick your debt habit. If you do a consumer proposal, I hope you cut up your credit cards after and stop buying things that aren’t essential. Especially if you don’t have the cash on your debit card for it.

Your wife needs to get a job, any job, even with a temp agency. There’s no excuse to sit at home and exhaust EI unless your field of work is so niche or seasonal it’s hard to find work.

  • RollTacker

Your debt is really not that big that you can certainly beat it.
If you took on a second job, and your wife worked for a few months you can beat this. 20k in cc and personal loan with two people working, i’d say 6 months easy, 1 year tops.

If you’ve consolidated your debt before, yet you still have credit card debt then doesn’t seem like you adjusted your habits. /You also fallen into the banks trap.

  • UnreasonableCletus

Tackle one thing at a time.

Minimum payments on everything except the highest interest and put every spare dollar into that one. Rinse and repeat.

I’m not sure what you do for work but you can do a lot better than 50k, any second income from your spouse will be key in paying it down.

It may also be worth seeking out a decent tax accountant and seeing what they can do to get you more money back.

Best of luck, it’s a shitty situation but far from impossible.

  • daniellederek

YOUR WIFE NEEDS A JOB!!!! any job, even if it’s selling feet pics and panties.

YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY ANYTHING YOU CANNOT EAT. seriously. Food only for the next 18 months. Only exception is things that generate revenue or are ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED to generate revenue.

NO RESTERANTS, NO COFFEE, NO DOLLAR STORE (outside of the food aisle and only after price matching)

  • Smoky_Caffeine

I’m confused how people even get into a hole like this, 8000 in credit card debt? How do you get there, even to 2000 and not think “maybe I should pay this off before I spend another 6000”. I wouldn’t say you’re screwed but after reading alot of posts here I think I’m doing things wrong not getting into thousands of credit card debt.

  • Quietser

Your wife needs a job, it doesn’t matter what. Shitty jobs are shitty but at least they pay. Warehousing. Postal services. Amazon. She is not going to find a dream job after being out of work since March, that’s a red flag for most. She may even be able to get into the trades, lots of companies love hiring women because it makes them look inclusive. Even if it’s for a little while at least it’s a paycheque.

She needs to work harder on her resume. Each application should be edited for that specific posting. Just copy and paste some of the requirements or job description into her resume and it will at least make it past the first stage of some computer auto sorting potential resumes. You can even use chat gpt to write a quick cover letter using some information from the posting and her resume. Super easy and only takes a few minutes.

You should look at getting a new career path or upgrading some skill you have to allow for some vertical movement. 50k is not enough anymore. I don’t know what you do but talk to your managers or supervisors and see what paths they may have taken, show initiative and interest you never know what positions may be opening or how growth may be viewed from higher levels.

If it’s possible maybe you can move back home with your wife and rent out your, I’m assuming, condo? You’re able to at least have your mortgage and probably a little more cash covered.

In earlier years you could sell your vehicle and at least downsize to something cheaper but used cars are still out of the question.

You’re not completely screwed yet but you and your wife’s holiday of easy free income is over. Time to realize you’re an adult and nobody is going to take care of you once you’ve fallen off the bus unless you’re working to care for yourself.

  • These-Art-5636

If you want financial guidance, you need to provide MORE info.

    After tax monthly income.
ALL of your monthly expenditures (debt payment, utilities, food, etc.)

If you want job search guidance, provide details of where you are in Alberta, your wife’s education/experience.

  • BBoberson

Where did you buy a house for 123k???

  • Outrageous-Fill3566

Tell your wife to download some delivery apps and start contributing to the household finances. She did not apply to over 500 jobs. Get real. It’s time to make money not wait for the job you want so you can be happy and comfortable. Thankfully EI has a limit or else these kinds of people would be on it forever until the dream job comes along.

  • Any-Ad-446

So about $150K in debt with $50k salary.Your wife needs to find some sort of income even if its a side gig.Same as yourself $50K is nothing these days you need to find a side job if possible. If your paying all the interest now and probably a tiny bit of principle you should survive but barely.CC is probably the worse rest is workable.Banks will help you out talk to them its free anyways.

  • TheCuriousBread

How the fuck did you borrow so much money with that job?

  • YoushutupNoyouHa

where did you buy a home for 123K and how big? tell me the location and the size and ill make you an offer right now and all your bills will disappear serious

  • DryTechnology5224

Where are you buying a house in Canada for 100k?!

  • Last-Blackberry-3725

Try to refinance your home, use the equity to pay off and close some of your debts.

  • Young-gwapo-el-chapo

    Pretty fucking screwed.

    Get your shit together.

115k mortgage is AMAZING. Mine is ONLY 5x that. Im jelly AF.

  • whitea44

YouÔÇÖre going the living poor for the next few years unless your household income increases. Your not screwed, but you are l by beyond your means. Cut everything you can and look for more earning opportunities. Even if itÔÇÖs Uber or something on weekends.

  • Yellowcardtoredcard

I would say, you’re screwed like a tightly placed coke cap. It’s a pain but easily fixed. Also your way ahead looking at your mortgage. Most people wish they have a mortgage amount that low, let alone a mortgage in general.

Your wife gets a min wage job (assuming min wage is $15) and works it full time, everything paid off in 2 years. I would pay off credit card off first, seeing as it’s most likely costing you roughly 20% interest.

Also getting a part time job yourself would help, would give you extra money to take your wife out on dates too. A lot of people forget to account for dates to show appreciation to your wife and it’s also nice to have a little break from regular life.

  • Rich4477

My one advice is ask you bank for a low interest credit card. If you have a good payment history they will give you 12.99.

  • SkinnyGetLucky

Have her print a bunch of cvs, walk from place to place and hand them out. She *will* find something and at this point, anything she contributes is a bonus

  • voyonstokebekicitte

Your wife needs to take any job that pays while she searches for a job in her field!

  • petitepedestrian

    Cars gotta go.
