****** just grabbed a
I have invested in a stock mutual fund for 30 years. Always left it there and just let it ride and it has been a roller coaster ride. BUT, in the long run I have made a lot of money on what I invested.
There have been times that it has gone down A LOT but times it has skyrocketed too. As long as your money is in a good fund you just have to look ahead. I recently shifted my to a more stable fund because I am nearing retirement and I don’t trust the current political climate to work in my favor. But long term has worked out very well.
And rememeber that you don’t actually have a loss till you pull it out.
Between personal investments and my 401k IÔÇÖm down roughly $30k at the moment. Ya I try to just not look lol
The 6k you deposited didnÔÇÖt disappear, 6k of your portfolio went away during a downturn. Time in the market always beats timing the market.
Which ETFS?
Also, the market is volitile right now.
AND, as someone who lived through the 2000-1 crash, 2008-10, yes it does suck to see things going down. Stay the course. Your dividends are buying you more than they would during a bull market, so you’ll capture the rebound.
The good part about retirement account losses is that they’re not real until you make them real. I don’t plan to retire for at least another 30 years, I’ll start to worry about where it’s at in 25 or so
Have you checked out r/bogleheads ? Might be worth it if you have more decades left in you. Vanguard and compounding interest game
Frankly thats why the best answer is not to look at it at all. Just let it ride and check in once every few months at best.
If you know it’ll go up in the long term and your goals are long term, just don’t check it.
You’re just gonna cause yourself unnecessary stress.
ThatÔÇÖs why you do it evenly over the year: to take advantage of the dips and even out the rises.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar_cost_averaging
I feel your pain my friend. This was the first year that I had the funds and incentive to max out my Roth at the beginning of the year. I know that the markets have always trended upwards historically and it SHOULD eventually come back up. But dang it – it was painful to see that drop after pumping that money in.
Everyone talks about investing as a hedge against inflation but VT all market ETF is down from 15 months ago. I would have lost less money to inflation keeping it in a Bank of America checking account.
(Yes I know it could have turned out differently. Just venting.)
I’ve lost so much this year and a half in my “conservative” 401k that even after employee match I’d have been better off stuffing it under my mattress. I lowered my contribution to 3 percent and switched to bonds and started buying physical assets instead.
Just an FYI- you can contribute fully at the start of the year and put it in a cash equivalent (within your Roth) then DCA (Dollar Cost Average) it throughout the year. The money is invested in a smaller amount but in a down market you may not get as hurt. (Btw: People DCA regardless of market projections)
WhatÔÇÖs the reasoning you do a lump sum investment? CanÔÇÖt you dollar cost average biweekly? ThereÔÇÖs an inherent benefit to DCAing
Why yes, the stock market can go down as well as up! It can even go sideways too!!
