Title: The Increasing Prices of Used Vehicles: Seeking Context and Solutions

Introduction:
In my quest to find the perfect used vehicle, I’ve been on the lookout for the past six months, patiently waiting for the ideal combination of color, options, and specifications. However, I’ve recently observed a concerning trend: the prices of used vehicles have been consistently rising during this time, and the availability of affordable options from my watch list has significantly decreased. Even more surprising is the fact that even the overpriced vehicles are now being sold. In an attempt to understand this situation better, I vaguely recall reading about possible vehicle shipment blockages in Japan or Australia, which could explain the limited stock in the market. As someone with an interest in this field, I am curious to know whether this is only a temporary phenomenon or if it signals a “new normal.”

The Impact of Increasing Prices:
The current scenario indicates that the used vehicle market is undergoing substantial changes. The disappearance of cheaper vehicles from the market and the rapid sale of overpriced ones may suggest a shift in supply and demand dynamics. I believe the cyclone floods damaged huge amounts of vehicles and has caused a supply and demand mismatch hence prices have gone up.

I know someone who purchased a Toyota RAV4 GX 2018 in December 2020 (with 70k odometer) for 24.5k. Asking price was 25k, but they wouldn’t budge by more than 500, and claimed that there would be lots of shortages coming soon. We didn’t believe them (used car salesmen lol), bought anyway, but they actually turned out to be telling the truth. The next year in 2021 there was a massive shortage of new cars, and this relatively new-ish used car seemed to go up in value to 34k, which was crazy.

Around a year ago, in mid-2022, similar cars seemed to be advertised for 26k-27k. Checking it now, looking for cars mirroring our current odometer of 90k, there’s one similar car advertised for 24k, but the rest are still at an asking price of around 26k. I guess this means they will probably accept 25k, but still crazy when you consider with typical depreciation the car should be worth no more than 21k by now.

On this 1 example, it seems 2021 had the crazy fast rise, and then lost most of that to a drop by mid-2022, but prices haven’t dropped much in the last year, which means your observation about prices recently rising could be correct, although the general trend over the last 2 years has been downward.

The market is the market. It goes in cycles, depending on fuel prices, import availability and will generally fluctuate a bit.

If you’re not in a hurry, just wait it out…. eventually a deal will come your way but the car you’re looking at might be 5 years older by then. Otherwise, just buy the best deal you can find when you need it.

  • yeanahsure

Strange I see the opposite happen. But I’m looking for slightly older models.

Either way, I can’t see used car prices stay high for much longer tbh. There surely was a shortage, but a car purchase is discretionary spending and we’ll see less of it in the coming months.

    Definitely seeing that trend.

Bought my 2017 RAV4 GX in 2018 with 17k odo for $27, can sell mine today with 40k on odo at the same price based on the trademe listings. I suspect popular model like RAV4 is still on restriction as the 2023/2024 order (for new) is still closed.

Also noticed that the 2nd hand Leaf price is also increasing slightly (though not to the 2022 level) – this I suspect is due to the petrol price closing to $3/ltr again, so people is looking back to affordable EV.

  • Too-Much_Too-Soon

Havent got much input but I had a workmate looking at buying similar model/mileage vehicle as mine just the other day. They asked what I paid for mine two years ago. The closest they can find seems to be a good two or three thousand more, maybe more, than what I paid.
