Optum Partners with Capella University to Address Growing Need for Skilled Nurses

In response to the increasing demand for skilled, advanced practice nurses, Optum, the health services arm of UnitedHealth Group, has partnered with Capella University, an accredited online university, to develop a new educational program.

The goal of this partnership is to combine Optum’s clinical expertise and sites of care with Capella’s educational capabilities, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for licensure and leadership in the nursing field.

The program addresses a critical need for qualified clinicians, as projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which estimates over 200,000 annual nursing job openings through 2031. However, nursing schools face faculty shortages, resulting in qualified students being turned away from nursing programs.

As part of the program, students will have the option to access a national network of care locations to gain real-world skills and may also have the opportunity to apply for positions at Optum. The program will also offer benefits for current Optum nurse practitioners, including reduced tuition and leadership development.

To meet the demand for skilled nurses, Optum and Capella University have launched the Master of Science in Nursing ÔÇô Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (MSN AG-PCNP) program, with enrollment now open.

In addition to contributing to the growing need for skilled nurses, Optum’s subsidiary, Optum Health, has played a crucial role in UnitedHealth Group’s strong financial performance. Optum’s revenue grew by 25% to $56.3 billion, and operating earnings increased by 13% to $3.7 billion.

Kristy Duffey, Chief Nursing Officer at Optum Health, stated, “By bringing together our unique sets of skills and capabilities, we will be able to train the next generation of highly qualified nurse practitioners equipped to take on the healthcare challenges of tomorrow.”
