It is crucial for people to exercise caution when buying medications on the internet, as illegal and counterfeit drugs pose an increasing threat to public health, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The proliferation of online pharmaceutical sellers has made it common for unlicensed “pharmacies” to operate, selling substandard or fake products without requiring a prescription. Deputy Director-General Cheng Hwei-fang (ÚÖ│µâáÞè│) of the FDA pointed out.

Many medicines of dubious origin that lack active or potentially harmful ingredients are often being peddled by overseas-based websites, posing significant risks to public health and violating the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act (ÞùÑõ║ïµ│ò), she warned last week.

FDA official Yang Po-wen (µÑèÕìܵûç) stated that some online sellers from other countries falsely claim to be based in Taiwan, leading consumers to unknowingly engage in illegal unlicensed imports.

When customs authorities discover medicines or medical products in parcels destined for Taiwan, they refer the cases to the prosecutors’ office, Yang added.

Those who unknowingly purchase drugs from overseas can face fines of up to NT$30,000 (US$942), mentioned by Yang as a deterrent.

Illegal online pharmacies operating without a license may be subject to fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$2 million, while importers of unlicensed pharmaceuticals could face severe penalties of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to NT$100 million, according to Chen. Those who sell or intend to sell unauthorized products can receive prison sentences of up to seven years and fines of up to NT$50 million, she added.

Chen revealed that there were 820 cases of illegal online pharmaceutical sales in the first half of the year, with 567 involving unlicensed pharmacies. Last year, there were 1,575 cases of illegal online pharmaceutical sales and 1,152 unlicensed pharmacies.

ItÔÇÖs important to note that licensed online pharmacies are only allowed to sell Class B over-the-counter medicines without a prescription, such as hand sanitizers, mouthwashes, rubbing alcohol, and ointments like Tiger Balm. Class A over-the-counter medicines, such as painkillers, flu medicines, and cough drops, can only be sold by physical pharmacies, the FDA emphasized.
