Seeking Advice on Breaking My Lease in Canada

I am in need of some guidance regarding a legal issue I encountered last year. I broke my 1-year lease after getting a legal notice from the landlord, which I unfortunately did not see as I had him blocked. I had my own valid reasons for leaving, despite having discussed the matter with the landlord prior. The living situation had become extremely unhealthy for me, and the opportunity to move to a more affordable room presented itself, prompting me to leave.

To my surprise, I was penalized for breaking my lease, doubling the amount I owe for the entire lease period. I assumed that leaving an apartment early would not cause any significant issues, especially considering that I was not the first tenant to do so. However, I now find myself in a difficult position and would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions on the options available to me.

I reside in Canada and am unsure of the legal steps I can take to address this issue. Additionally, I was also undergoing counseling at the time and had been dealing with a bed bug problem in the apartment. This compounded my living difficulties, further contributing to my decision to leave.

    >I broke my 1 year lease last year … I had some own reasons to leave and I had talked to the landlord about leaving but he convinced me to stay but … I just left … Thought this wouldn’t create any issue because I lived in an apartment and I wasn’t the first one to do this but …

Play stupid game, pay stupid tax. If you simply break your lease and walk away, then you can expect your landlord to sue your ass.

    >it was getting way to unhealthy for me to live there and the same time someone called me and said they have a room available for a cheaper price and I just left. … I was also going for counselling at that time and for a while had a beg bugs problem.

Without a lot more information all one can say is that even bedbugs are most likely not going to get you out of what you owe your landlord for breaking your lease, and the rest of that isn’t your landlord’s problem.

    >the last month I got a legal notice from the landlord that I didn’t see because I had him blocked.

You didn’t get a “legal notice” you got an e-mail (or something like that) with a threat of legal action.

    >Can anyone suggest me, if I have any options.

Try and work out a settlement deal with your old landlord. If you don’t do that, then they will probably file a civil lawsuit against you, and they will probably obtain a judgment against you, and they will probably garnish your bank account or wages, etcetera, to pay the judgment.

Have your lease reviewed. In some states it’s illegal to put such clauses like that in a lease.
