    As others have said, you’ll have to call them. Some things to keep in mind though…

    – Sometimes charges aren’t added to a bill until after they’ve been processed against any possible insurance or aid. Occasionally, that will delay a charge for a service from showing up in the initial bill.

    – The bill may have been generated prior to when you made your last payments so, on the day the bill was actually created, that was your true balance, but it isn’t now. The only way to know your true current balance is to talk to the billing department directly.

    Is it for the same service? Sometimes you get charged by the hospital and then a separate charge from the physician

    Every time I go to the hospital I get multiple bills. One from the hospital, one from each doctor that sees me and one from the nursing staff and one from the pharmacy. At least one of them is out of network every time.

    I absolutely refuse to go to hospitals or doctors unless IÔÇÖm taken there while unconscious.

    As uncomfortable as These calls are they still have to be made. When you call make it clear that you will need a proper statement showing all details including date of service, exactly what service was performed, your account number, how much was previously billed, how much insurance paid and your previous payments. ThatÔÇÖs just basic billing 101.

    Having spent decades in various entities doing billing and accounts receivable I donÔÇÖt know how they could possibly have generated computerized billing without a legitimate account number. It just doesnÔÇÿt happen.

    You have to call ÔÇö just ask them ÔÇ£help me understand what this additional charge is for. I thought I paid already on X date.ÔÇØ If their answer is too generic, you are absolutely allowed to ask them to send you an itemized invoice.

    I had a baby last December, paid up my bills in February after insurance had processed everything, and then they sent me another invoice for $2,000 in May. I called, asked them to clarify their billing, and they couldnÔÇÖt justify the numbers. They ended up *refunding* me $350.

    If they can justify the numbers and you canÔÇÖt pay the bill, ask for a payment plan.

    Make sure you check whatever bills they send you against the EOB from your insurance company — you shouldn’t be paying anything more than what your insurance says says you owe after whatever insurance has covered.

    1. Gather all the information you have – Payment receipts (since you paid by credit card, pull the credit card statements from your card’s website); your EOB from your insurance’s website to see what was submitted to insurance and what they covered.
    2. Reconcile what you can based on the information you have.
    3. Make a quick script of how to best explain your problem so that you start the conversation clearly with them.
    4. Call the billing department – explain the situation to them and refer to the information you have.
    -write down their name (ask for spelling if necessary), the date and time of the call (date and time is also helpful if you need to ask them to go back to a recorded conversation. Their CRM will keep track of all the interactions you have with them, but since you don’t know exactly what they use, it can help)
    – take notes (go back after the call and fill in any gaps so you can understand the notes when you refer to them later);
    – repeat back to them anything that you may not be 100% clear on, any actions they say they will do, and any actions they need you to do.
    – ask when you can expect to hear back for them or when you should call back.
    5. Since providers and facilities bill separately, you may need to call more than one billing group.

    The important thing is to keep very detailed notes. I’ve had a couple billing hiccups where my notes made it easier to resolve the issue and that I did due diligence to solve problems and that the error was clearly on them. All of those notes, I keep stapled together with the billing statements and retain for the standard 7 years.

    If you havenÔÇÖt already, setup an online account with your insurance provider. Look at the EOBs, explanation of benefits. It will tell you how much you owe. There could be multiple for the visit.

    If they are trying to charge you more than the EOB states, call & ask them to review the balance. Tell them you think the contractual allowances where not correctly applied. These are the difference between what they billed & what your insurance allows. They are not allowed to bill you this. It could be an honest billing mistake or issue with how the payment from the insurance company posted. Most are posted automatically by the system & issues are not always caught before statements are generated. This is why you need to look at the EOBs your insurance company sends you to know what you owe.

    If you donÔÇÖt think the EOB is correct, call the insurance company. IÔÇÖve had this happen before. I had surgery & when the claim was processed, their software basically crashed. It denied all claims filled for a 3 or 4 day period. I got billed for the entire surgery. IÔÇÖve also seen insurance companies for whatever reason not properly pay claims. I used to work in healthcare, not as a biller but saw & heard enough from my friends that were. I learned more about reading remits than I ever wanted to know.
