## Car Fire Incident after Dealership Service

Yesterday, I brought my car in for a scheduled recall at the BMW dealership. The car was picked up by my dad and driven home, about 5 km away. Today, when I took the car out, I noticed a faint smoke smell. Eventually, I realized that the battery in the rear of the car was on fire, and soon the whole car was engulfed in flames. I managed to capture a quick video of the battery compartment on fire. Considering that the battery would need to be disconnected and reconnected during service as a safety precaution, I strongly believe that this may have been the cause of the fire.

## Seeking Guidance on Next Steps

I am looking for advice on what actions to take, including any ‘do’s or ‘don’ts’ in this situation. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the dealership to obtain a printout of the driven mileage since the service, which was less than 10 km. I do not intend to mention the fire incident at this time.

They’re not going to admit liability and cut you a big cheque. Call your insurer and let them deal with it.

Don’t touch it. Call ICBC, they will have a cause and origin expert look at it to determine what caused the fire. Don’t touch it, don’t contact the dealership. The more you do the more likely you are to eff it up for the insurance co. Which means you are less likely to get your deductible back, if fire has a deductible in BC.

    That’s why you have insurance.

It should be covered by your insurance. Give them the details and let them figure it out.

DO NOT talk to anyone before you call insurance. Get all of the info on file and make sure they know about the service. Contacting the service station will not help you in any way. Let the insurance company contact them

My codpiece is BIGGER than your codpiece!! The smell of grease and oil is strong in this forum.

    LMAO

“Hello, I had my vehicle in for a recall yesterday and last night it started on fire! I would like more information on the full extent of the work you performed. I don’t know what started the fire, but I need to be confident that it is not related to the work you did. And my insurance will likely need that information as well.”

What work did you get done? Most car repairs don’t require the battery to be disconnected. And while a loose battery lug could potentially cause a spark and maybe a fire it’s not particularly likely.

  • Deep_Carpenter

Proving the dealership is liable is improbable.

  • fleurira

Make sure you call the car company’s customer service. Theyll likely want to also investigate, and they might be able to assist

  • SpacedDuck

What was your recall and where did you get your mechanics license?

Just curious as you mentioned that with it being in for service they would have disconnected the battery for safety reasons.

By now you probably get where I’m going which is that’s a ridiculous assumption lol.

Smart to get info first. However, I would talk to them about fire. Immediately afterwards.
