    Have you called the airline and talked to them? I’ve seen return international flights get cancelled due to weird clerical issues, often times due to data getting lost in translation between American and foreign airlines.

    I’m a large person, and I frequently fly with an extra seat. International is a pain.

    First, the “it’s illegal” argument: the airline is absolutely required to give an accurate passenger list to the authorities in the departure/arrival countries. Inaccuracies here—including fake names extra seats are booked under—are a big deal that will get the airline fined. The gate agents and flight attendants are trained on this, and on the need for accurate counts and passenger reconciliation. That’s where the flight attendant is coming from, even if they seem to have gotten it a bit garbled (from “accurate passenger list a must” to “more than one seat per passenger is impossible”).

    The problem is airlines have very old computer systems, which mostly don’t support a single passenger having two seats. Different airlines work around this in different ways, often by booking an extra seat with the passenger’s first and last names, and EXST or XS as the middle name, plus some information linking the two bookings.

    On domestic flights, they just check in both boarding passes. On international, the name accuracy rules mean they can’t: instead, they need to check in the first seat and block the extra seat without checking it in, and then somehow stop the later segments from getting automatically cancelled.

    If there are multiple airlines involved, this part is very difficult—see above about old computer systems.

    It’s really important that the extra seat is booked correctly. This almost always involves calling the airlines involved directly; the websites and travel agents will not be able to do this correctly. (Southwest is a refreshing exception here!)

    Your redress here is with the airline that sold you the tickets. They need to refund you, which should be fairly easy if the tickets were booked correctly to begin with. Start with their customer service department, and you should be able to get you the refund and some miles or something as compensation.

    You’re probably not going to get much more than that: the airlines contract is to get you from A to B, which they did, and their liability in any case is severely limited, especially in international flights. If you don’t at least get the ticket cost back, escalate with a complaint to the Department of Transport.

    The flight attendant didn’t cancel the return, the system did, likely because one seat was not checked in properly. How did the person buying the tickets, set up the extra seat? You can’t just slap a name on it, there are procedures that have to be followed so that precisely this kind of thing doesn’t happen. Your recourse now is with the airline. Call them, keep calm and cool and find out exactly what happened and why. See what they can do to reinstate the return reservations and compensate you for the ticket. Don’t be afraid to walk it up the chain with the airline. Unfortunately this kind of thing does happen, but for now it’s a customer service issue.

    Next time, contact the airline and buy “extra seat for special luggage handling”. The price is cheaper because the luggage does not eat/drink.

    For example, artist who travels with their special instrument (million $) that cannot be fitted in overhead bin will buy a seat for their instrument instead risking their costly instrument checkin under belly and abused by luggae handlers.

    Did the person who purchased the tickets follow the process needed to purchase an extra empty seat?

    If the terms and conditions of the ticket have been breached, then, yes, an airline can cancel tickets.

    It certainly is not “illegal” because Turkish proactively offers you an extra seat during the booking process if you want to pay for some extra room. We’ve used this options before with success.

    Did they use a fake name for the extra seat or was it labeled extra seat?

    When they boarded the flight, did three people hand fur boarding passes to the gate agent, and did the gate agent scan those four boarding passes for three people, and was there any discussion or acknowledgement as to why three passengers had four boarding passes?

    Not a lawyer, so I can’t speak to the legal question.

    But it sounds like she simply purchased the seat wrong OR checked in wrong. I’d guess she bought both seats with her name and her documents. Then only checked into one. I’m betting she only had one boarding pass and/or only had one boarding pass scanned.

    The gate agent saw the no-show seat and put a standby passenger in that seat.

    And the system automatically cancelled the return flight for the ticket that wasn’t checked in or didn’t get its boarding pass scanned.

    Really, this isn’t a legal question at all. This is a “call the airline and get somebody to tell you what happened and how to prevent it next time” question.

    I would be on the phone with the airline demanding they get a flight reinstated because the flight attendant canceled a valid flight without cause, directly against the airline’s own public documentation.

    How did you book that extra seat? Whose name and passport number did you use? Did you contact the airline and tell them it was an extra seat for room? You haven’t answered any questions. As far as the airline knows the person that seat belonged to never flew and their ticket was cancelled. Call the airline and speak to them to get their return flight arranged.

    My understanding is that on international flights you have to provide an identity of a person for each seat, so if that person does not exist or has no intention of traveling, I can’t say if it’s illegal but it doesn’t sound ethical. Additionally you are required to comply with all crew member instructions so the airline may be within its right to refuse service or pursue action depending on the scenario (we don’t know, we weren’t there). You may have a leg to stand on for customer service, but I would seriously question whether or not they were acting against the law.
