### Situation Overview
I recently sideswiped a car and unfortunately did not stop at the scene out of panic. I have provided my details to the police, who have shared them with the other party involved in the accident.
### Damage Assessment
My car sustained some paint transfer and a small dent, which I was able to partially repair by polishing it off. However, I am not concerned about the damage to my vehicle, as I only have third-party insurance that will not cover the repairs anyway.
On the other hand, the other car has scratches on the side of the front bumper as a result of the accident.
### Insurance Concerns
Considering my basic excess of $600, an additional $500 due to my age bracket (21 to 24 years old), and another $500 due to having held my open license for less than 2 years, I am unsure about whether to submit a claim. If the repair costs are below the total excess amount, what would be the best course of action?

Wait till the other party contacts you & pass your insurance details to them..if you haven’t already done so. What did your insurer say? You can ring them and ask a general question without providing any personal details. Have you read your PDS? every insurer is different and nobody is going to give a one size fits all answer. It would be best to report this anyway to your insurer as it is a possible claim coming their way and this is something you can ask them at the same time. Again check your PDS..
If the repairs are under excess it wouldn’t be a coverable event.. in saying that though, it’s not just repair costs. It’s possible towing and hire car costs incurred as well.
You can lodge a claim now or wait until you receive a letter of demand from the other party, either way the excess will unfortunately need to be paid for insurance to cover you (unless section 51ed) If you’re experiencing financial hardship and can’t pay the lump sum, ask for information regarding a payment plan..
You are best to try & deal with the affected party direct which you could have done if you had been honest & not done a runner. Get the other parties contact or tell insurance company you want to try negotiate with them & see if you can get the repair done under $1600 just a scratch can be expensive once a repair shop sees it. Anything under $2000 u should pay yourself without claiming otherwise ur insurance premium will ho up next tome anyway.
With info given:
3rd party insurance (property or compulsory?)
OP is at fault.
OP’s car has no damage.
If/when the other party or their insurance company contacts you, ask for a “Proof of Loss”.
(basically, how much are they wanting to claim from you).
Then you can decide whether you want to make a claim on your insurance (if it is 3rd party PROPERTY insurance), or, just pay the other guy/their insurance company.
source: when I had a similar bingle, this was my insurance company’s tip. In the end, I got the proof of loss, and the dollar amount was about the same as the excess. I knew that if I made an insurance claim, I’d also lose my no claim bonus and would have a higher premium next year. I just paid the other guy’s insurance company the $800 or whatever it was.
Check your policy and/or ask your insurance company.
In the unlikely event the other drivers damages (plus car hire) are less than $1600, your insurance company should refund the difference
What does your PDS state?
They charge the same excess even if the damage costs $1 to fix. That’s how they make money.
Any smart person would offer to just pay for their repair and leave insurance out of it. I suggest talking to the guy you crashed and work something out.
