For $80k you get a couple of roofers out to write a report on the state of the work (get photos too) and either you demand the company come back and fix it to an acceptable standard or you hire someone else and sue them for the cost to fix what they did wrong. Your insurance wonÔÇÖt cover poor construction so itÔÇÖs 100% on the roofer to fix this.

you didnt get another opinion before agreeing to pay the first 40k or the second 40k??

40k is a crazy price for a new roof unless you live in a mansion

Most if not all states have a contractor board here in California it’s called Contractor State License Board. Contractors are supposed to have a bond amount (Vary by state) you can check their website and it should list the contractors insurance, bond info tell the contractor you need them to come and fix their work or you’ll have to file a complaint with their bond company and with the license board. A claim on their license or bond can cause them to either lose their license or increase their bond amount exponentially. The license board is there to protect consumers. This of course is assuming they’re actually licensed and bonded. If they’re not you can still report them to the board for contracting without a license.

Get a breakdown (materials & labor) for the roof decking. Unless you have a roof that contains some kind of hazardous material like asbestos, that pricing seems insane.

Found these where you can get info on how to report them if they don’t work with you. If you speak with the contractor over the phone follow-up with a text or email so you have proof of conversations. Hope this helps.

See what your insurance company says. They may be able to help.

IÔÇÖm curious, what kind of roofing material did you have and how many square feet (or squares) of roofing?

  • Capable_End6025

The roofers definitely made some profit off of you. But you probably did need the roof and framing replaced after leaking long and bad enough to be noticeable inside. My first thought reading the post was likely bad flashing somewhere. Contractors see bad work all the time. Reporting it is not their prerogative. Get a private inspector.

The first agreement you entered into was the patch job, for which you were quoted $5K. If they represented that this work would fix the leak, then it sure seems like they didn’t fulfill their end, and you can go after them for that.

The second and third agreements you entered into were ill-considered, but may be irrelevant to the dispute, unless they represented that this additional work had some bearing on the leak. But I imagine these things were in need of replacement regardless of whether there was a leak.

TLDR: Find a consumer protection attorney and they will guide you through this. I just went through a very similar issue, and IÔÇÖm still having issues itÔÇÖs infuriating.

One thing I learned the hard way is check the contract you signed for an arbitration clause. This means it will be much more expensive and difficult to sue them. It will often state that you have to submit your complaint in writing, and they will have so many days to respond etc.

As for the legal end, you need a consumer rights / protection attorney to guide you through this. TheyÔÇÖre somewhat hard to find in my area, hopefully NY has more consumer protection attorneys than Ohio. Fingers crossed there is no arbitration clause in your contract.

Some of the comments posted are asking for roof specs (size, pitch, materials, etc). While I admit IÔÇÖm also curious about those questions out of pure morbid curiosity (as $80K is an uncommon amount to pay for a roof), I think thereÔÇÖs a practical reason to analyze them. If you can determine the entire job was based in dishonesty, it can help you determine whether you should trust anything the roofing company is saying now. So, please tell us what $80K got you apart from a leaky roof (i.e. square footage of roof, type of roofing material/system installed, and any information about the pitch(es) of your roof you may have are probably most important for cost). DonÔÇÖt mean to poke fun, as youÔÇÖre having to endure what sounds truly unpleasant, but always helps to try to keep things somewhat lighthearted!

Are you in NYC by any chance? I had an EXTREMELY similar case happen to my family recently by a shady ‘company’ that also performed roofing, and when my mother reached out to the local community to warn others about it she found out the exact same company had done they exact same scam to other people too. Your story sounds exactly like us but with our flooding basement- quoted 3.5k for full water proofing, signed a contract, SOME work was started but every day the quote was higher and we had to keep re-signing contracts while being told the previous one was now moot, even after we were told it was the ‘final’ quote. 3.5k became 6k, then 9k, then 12k, then 14.5k over the course of less than a week, and when my family put their foot down at the 12k mark they completely stopped working and left our cellar unfinished, definitely not waterproofed, as well as a massive hole exposed in the cellar’s foundation leading directly to the backyard that then had to be re-sealed (we called a different company and it cost another 1.5k). If you’re willing to drop the name of the company, where you hired them through or anything like that, i’m super curious…
