Kabosu, the dog famous for inspiring countless “doge” memes, has passed away as confirmed by her owner on Friday.

The beloved Japanese shiba inu peacefully fell asleep at the age of 18, according to Atsuko Sato’s blogpost.

At the time of Kabosu’s passing, birds were chirping outside as Sato bid her farewell, describing her as the happiest dog in the world.

Kabosu rose to fame in 2010 when her iconic photo with folded paws and a curious expression went viral on the internet.

The proliferation of “doge” memes ensued, with Kabosu’s face being humorously edited onto various objects and animals by internet users.

Kabosu’s fame peaked in December 2013 when she became the emblem of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, spawning a wave of meme tokens.

Dogecoin gained further popularity with the endorsement of Elon Musk, who once sought opinions on accepting the cryptocurrency for Tesla payments.

In a crypto frenzy in early 2021, Dogecoin demand surged to the extent of briefly disrupting Robinhood’s trading system.

A Dogecoin post hailed Kabosu as the community’s inspiration, highlighting her global impact through a heartfelt tribute.

Sato disclosed Kabosu’s health struggles in 2022, revealing her battle with leukemia and liver issues, ahead of a planned farewell event.
