    First IÔÇÖd encourage you to read/understand your LES. Go through all of your deductions/entitlements and write those down. Did you account for BAS in your $36k? You should already be paying life insurance (SGLI) and a small amount of medical if you have dependents (for dental or Tricare Select if you chose that option). ThereÔÇÖs also Federal tax, SS and Medicare.

    Keep in mind that BAH and BAS are tax-free, so although you ÔÇ£makeÔÇØ $36k in the Army, roughly half of that isnÔÇÖt taxed; all $50k of your civ job will be taxed.

    Second, IÔÇÖd encourage you to go through your bank statements/credit card(s) and make a list of every. single. thing that you have purchased for the past 3 months. Group this into categories such as groceries, eating out, gas, subscriptions, car maintenance, car insurance, personal development, etc. If you own a house, figure out your monthly mortgage, interest, prop tax, and insurance. If you have dependents, factor in their expenses too. Basically, establish accountability for every dollar you spend and come up with your monthly ÔÇ£burn rateÔÇØ (how much $ you spend).

    Next, make a 2-column T chart. One side should be ÔÇ£ArmyÔÇØ the other side of the chart should be ÔÇ£Civ.ÔÇØ Write down the average for each expense on the Army side, then guesstimate what that expense will be as a civilian. For example, if youÔÇÖre commuting a far distance to post but your civ job is closer, your gas bill will hopefully be less.

    Another element to consider to estimate civ expenses is to determine whether your military status is qualifying you for discounts on some expenses. For example, lots of people swear by AMEX credit cards and get the $695 fee waived so that they can get Disney+ and go to airport lounges. If youÔÇÖre used to not paying that annual fee but intend to keep the credit card, youÔÇÖll want to be tracking that so it doesnÔÇÖt catch you off guard as a civ.

    Do you ask for a military discount everywhere you shop? If so, IÔÇÖd estimate at least a 10% increase for every expense as a civ.

    There might be other drastic changes. For example, if you have USAA for car insurance or banking, confirm if you can stay with them or need to find another provider. For health insurance and life insurance, shop around for rates. You will be surprised how much health insurance costs, even for cheap coverage. For life insurance, look into a term policy. Avoid whole life.

    The final two categories to add are debt and retirement. If you have any debt, how much are you paying? And is your rate a benefit of SCRA? Do you have student loans? Are you doing PSLF? How much are you contributing to TSP or your Roth IRA every month? Does your new employer have a TSP rollover option?

    Once you have an estimate for all of your monthly civilian expenses, add up THAT number and multiply by 12 to get your minimum yearly salary. This is how much you should be negotiating for your civ job salary.

    You could also just estimate needing 25-30% more as a civilian. Take your current military salary and divide by 0.75 or 0.7 to get those numbers. Being taxed on more $, being in a higher tax bracket, paying more for insurance and losing out on discounts etc. really add up quickly.

    Health care is a HUGE one. Living expenses if you were on base, taxes on the whole 50k, life insurance should be cheapish but definitely look into it. Expect to expand your wardrobe for a professional environment and buy a bunch of stuff for your new residence if you’re moving, *especially* if you’re leaving the barracks. Also utilities, if you aren’t dealing with that right now.

    As an example on the health care, similar coverage to Tricare for my family of five would normally be about 20k/yr plus copays and whatnot. That does not include dental coverage.

    You had a family? I’m assuming you have family that’s why you would have BAH as an E4. This mean the insurance cost covered for you are huge factors and 14k might not be that much more. All the benefits for someone with family provided by the base can add to that. Use DFAS total compensation calculator to find out at least what a civilian job has to offer to match your current pay depending on location. The military is hurting in recruiting and retention so there may be MOS that will provide even bigger incentive for reclass.

    There are subsidized services on base that cost much less than outside. Childcare, commissary, and gym being the biggest costs that affect a family. Transportation costs without a DIY car care center can add up. You don’t get as many days off, so account for the cost of those as long as you had made use of them to do something productive while in.
