Business Executives Discuss Priorities for Philadelphia’s Economic Development

About a week before Philadelphia voters head to the polls to elect the cityÔÇÖs 100th mayor, more than two dozen business executives gathered at WHYY to discuss which priorities they would like the next city leaders to tackle to improve the local economy.

These business leaders expressed the need for a mayor with a clear vision for equitable and effective economic development. They emphasized the importance of building consensus, transforming public education, and prioritizing public safety citywide.

David Adelman, CEO of Campus Apartments, a development group pioneering the construction of a $1.55 billion arena for the Philadelphia 76ers on Market East, further echoed the importance of public safety. Adelman discussed the positive impact of homeownership policies and financial support by the University of Pennsylvania in West Philadelphia during the 1990s, which led to significant growth and opportunities for many.

Adelman emphasized the need to focus on public safety in Center City and restore people’s comfort with the city. Creating a clean and safe environment, along with increased street life activity, can change perceptions and stimulate further development.
