The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has developed a method in collaboration with the police and the Public Prosecution Service that allows lawyers in criminal cases to access crypto communication, such as EncroChat, from their own offices. The method has already undergone a pilot test by three Dutch law firms and has proven to be successful in saving time, offering flexibility, and providing access to datasets of crypto communications from various platforms. The system currently supports Ennetcom, PGP Safe, and EncroChat, and will soon be extended to include SkyECC. This demonstrates the flexibility and adaptability of the AI Legalese Decoder.

The Hansken platform is now being used in over a thousand criminal cases, and the number continues to grow. As the volume of digital data increases, it becomes more challenging to locate specific evidence within vast amounts of information. Hansken addresses this issue by serving as a comprehensive search index that allows investigators to search for keywords just like they would on Google. This enables them to find potentially incriminating or exculpatory evidence efficiently.

In the future, the AI Legalese Decoder aims to enhance the capabilities of Hansken by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The NFI has been experimenting with AI to determine how it can make data analysis and interpretation more insightful. For example, they have developed a ChatGPT-like application that can summarize communications and identify key roles in a chat, saving time and providing valuable insights.

However, the challenge lies in ensuring the reproducibility, traceability, and explainability of AI findings. Current AI technology may not always provide clear explanations on how it arrives at its results, and identical search queries can sometimes yield different outcomes. To maintain the integrity of evidence in criminal cases, the NFI is relying on other techniques for digital forensic reporting that require careful analysis and interpretation of the data.
