Craighead County Drug Court Celebrates Recovery Month

The Craighead County Drug Court is commemorating Recovery Month in September with a series of programs aimed at encouraging participants in their rehabilitation journey. Christa Glover, a Drug Court Advisor for the Arkansas Department of Corrections, has announced the plans for the month-long celebration.

The Purpose and Benefits of the Drug Court Program

The Drug Court program was established in 2003 by retired Circuit Judge David Laser. It offers a rehabilitative approach for non-violent offenders, providing a more cost-effective alternative to incarceration. The program also offers a pathway for successful participants to resolve their criminal charges, whereas unsuccessful participants are dismissed and subjected to regular sentencing.

Participants in the program are required to undergo random drug tests, seek drug treatment and counseling, maintain stable housing and employment, and work towards a GED if applicable. They are also required to regularly attend Drug Court sessions for assessment of their sobriety and progress. The program has a minimum duration of one year.

Special Programs and Guest Speakers

During both National Drug Court Month in May and National Recovery Month in September, Drug Court organizes special events for their participants. In line with this, the court has invited four guest speakers to provide insight and motivation throughout September.

The guest speakers for the month include:

1. Warden Phillip Glover, who supervises the Northeast Arkansas Community Corrections Center, a facility that combines prison and treatment services.
2. Devalyn Duke, the owner and operator of Duke’s Hot Shot Delivery Services and Delta Crawfish, Cajun Cafe and Market in Jonesboro and Paragould. Duke has overcome his troubled past and achieved success as a small business owner.
3. Jimmy McGill, the author of “From Prison to Purpose.” McGill serves as the executive director of Next Step Recovery Housing, the stateÔÇÖs recovery manager for the Arkansas Department of Human Services, and is the stateÔÇÖs first Peer Recovery Peer Supervisor (PRPS).
4. Micah Crews, the assistant area manager for community supervision officers in Craighead and Poinsett Counties.

As part of their presentations, the guest speakers share their personal stories of struggle, redemption, and success. They emphasize the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences, seeking education or trade skills, engaging in volunteer work, and practicing self-forgiveness. They also highlight the impact of decisions on one’s own life and family.

To further celebrate Recovery Month, two other special events are scheduled. The first-ever NEA Drug Court Alumni Breakfast will take place this Saturday at NEA Divine Interventions in Jonesboro. Additionally, the 20th Anniversary of the Craighead County Drug Court will be celebrated with a cookout on Tuesday.
