UKÔÇôTaiwan Renewable Energy Conference strengthens collaboration on renewable energy development

The 18th UKÔÇôTaiwan Renewable Energy Conference, held with the aim of achieving net-zero targets by 2050, focused on deepening the partnership and exploring further collaboration opportunities between the UK and Taiwan in the field of renewable energy. The conference witnessed the participation of over 150 individuals, including 10 British business representatives. Discussions revolved around global renewable energy trends, best practices in floating wind development, and the operations and maintenance of offshore wind. To inaugurate the conference, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Taiwan, and Yi-Ling CHEN, Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, represented the UK and Taiwan, respectively.

During the conference, UK grid technology company Reactive Technologies celebrated the rollout of its GridMetrix┬« platform in collaboration with Taiwan Power Company. The platform, a grid stability measurement service software, provides real-time insight into the stability of a power system. It allows grid operators like Taiwan Power to effectively manage risks, thereby leading to significant cost savings. Through this partnership, Taiwan Power will gain the ability to accurately measure, visualize, forecast, and control inertia across its network. This data and insight are crucial as Taiwan’s power grid transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

The Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan, Yi-Ling CHEN, acknowledged the ongoing cooperation between Taiwan and the UK for the past 17 years. Both sides consider offshore wind as a key area of collaboration, encompassing aspects such as planning, investigation, construction, and operation. Additionally, the development of other emerging renewable energy technologies like floating wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage is deemed crucial. Taiwan expressed appreciation for the valuable insights regarding renewable energy shared by the UK in previous conferences.

The APAC Regional Energy Lead of the Department for Business and Trade, Umair Choudhry, as the UK Chair of the conference, emphasized the strong partnership between the UK and Taiwan in the renewable energy sector. Particularly, the expertise, experience, and resources possessed by the UK can support Taiwan in the development of its offshore wind industry. Choudhry emphasized the importance of building a sustainable partnership between the two countries that prioritizes the vision for a sustainable future.

Cheng-Wei YU, Director General of the Bureau of Energy in Taiwan, mentioned that the UK holds a leading position in the global renewable energy field. Taiwan has long considered the UK as a crucial partner in achieving its energy transition goals. The collaboration between Taiwan and the UK in grid stability monitoring services was acknowledged during the conference, and it is expected that more partnerships between companies from Taiwan and the UK will be established in the renewable energy field.

Known as the UK’s most important offshore wind partner in the Asia Pacific Region, Taiwan has attracted more than 40 UK offshore wind companies to set up operations in the country, with many of these offices serving as the regional Asia-Pacific hub.
