In the midst of the rubble, I met Hussein, who was desperately digging through his collapsed house, hoping to salvage his family’s belongings. Hussein recounted the harrowing experience of being with his family during dinner when the ceiling collapsed. Tragically, his brother lost his life. “It is God’s decision,” he solemnly stated. Armed with a pickaxe, he diligently cleared away the fallen stones and earth.

Isolated from the outside world, the residents emphasized the urgent need for additional assistance.

Fatouma, a resident, shared her trembling experience. She now calls a tent made of blankets and wood her home, overlooking the sole standing beacon of hope in Douzrou – the pink minaret of the village mosque. “May God protect us,” she prayed. “We are fighting for life, slowly.”
