    You don’t mention what state you’re in, but in California they’re legally not allowed to ask about anything criminal unless they are giving you an offer for the job.

    This is how I live my life and I feel your pain. I keep everyone at arm’s length, avoid giving my full name, telling people where I work, live or where my kids go to school, etc.
    Being a proud dad, I posted a picture of one of my kids in her swim suit which happened to have the name of the swim school emblazoned across the front. The next time we went for her lesson, I was turned away in the parking lot. “Someone else can bring your child, but not you.” (Ha ha, like I’m going to keep giving those assholes my money.) 
    Either someone at the school recognized me, or a FB “friend” felt the need to fuck me over. 

    Whenever I divulge something personal to a stranger or client I fret and beat myself up over it for days.

    Tomorrow I have a meeting w/ a potential new client who was referred by another customer. The thought of them freaking out at my nearly 40-year old conviction and spreading the news is rather unpleasant, to say the least. I just work as hard as I can to do a good job and hope that, if it ever does come up, they won’t care.
    Just gotta make this work for 7 more years and it’s “Hello, retirement!”

    I stopped bringing it up myself, if asked by interviewer or in the paperwork I’m honest. Could they say something to current employer? Maybe, but so Could anyone else who knows or looks up local sex offender registry in the area.

    Highly unlikely anyone would do that unless you have a job that they could determine may put someone at risk (I mean, if you worked at a daycare they’d probably call) but they legally cannot share the information on your background report with anyone who is not directly involved in the hiring process.

    And they probably assume the company you work at already knows anyway.
