My Daughter’s Suspected Neurodivergence and the Dilemma of Disclosure

Introduction

In the midst of our separation and subsequent new lives, a perplexing situation has arisen concerning our 14-year-old daughter. She strongly believes she may be neurodivergent (ND), struggling with certain cognitive and emotional differences, but unfortunately, her mother adamantly denies the existence of neurodivergence altogether. This has created a difficult predicament for both her and me. She desires to consult a general practitioner (GP) regarding her concerns but fears engaging in a potentially heated argument with her mother about the very existence of neurodivergence. Consequently, we find ourselves wondering whether she can simply state she doesn’t wish to disclose the exact reason for the GP visit, assuring her mother that she is not in any immediate danger.

I work in autism and adhd assessment. It is a one parent consent procedure to the assessment (and also the young person’s consent). I would always try to get information from anyone with parental responsibility as part of an assessment process but if a young person was set against this I would discuss with my wider team and if of an age to make that decision and not being pressured by the other parent that would usually be okay.

The GP will decide if sheÔÇÖs Gillick Competent and make any disclosure decisions based on that. IÔÇÖll warn you thought itÔÇÖs at least a 3 year wait for an initial appointment in most areas so by the time she gets a diagnosis if she does have a neurodivergence then sheÔÇÖll be over 16 and disclosing to her mother will be a moot point.

My experience is that the fact she has a parent who will be disclosed if needed. You. You are also her parent and legally this sounds like it could be a non-issue. You are her legal guardian as well and can consent to these matters.

There might be an issue as if she is diagnosed with something and needs medication would you trust you wife who ÔÇ£DoesnÔÇÖt believe ND exists,ÔÇØ to provide access and help for her?

You take her to assessments and appointments. The waitlist is brutal on NHS so check out Right To Choose for assessments. My own ADHD assessment was referred in 2017. It was actually carried out at the end of 2022. Depending on it if you google whatever ND she wants to be tested for it may lead to resources/charities to help with this.

SheÔÇÖs perfectly able to go and see the GP.

She cannot be compelled to disclose anything to her mother.

If her mother contacts the GP, they will assess what if anything to disclose.

Provided that she doesn’t lack capacity, as a fourteen-year-old your daughter is entitled to make her own decisions about her clinical care and neither parent has the right to see her medical record or indeed know anything about why she’s going to the doctor without her consent.

  • MasterAnything2055

Firstly. Your daughter thinking she has it means little. So yes. Take her to the doctor.

I think of you are over 11 you have a right to privacy. So she may not get access if your daughter asks them not to share

But giving your ex a medical diagnosis is surely the smart thing to do.
