AFWERX Partners with NASA for Advanced Air Mobility Operations Center

AAM Operations Center

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFRL) ÔÇô AFWERX is teaming up with NASA to develop a digital operations center for future Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) efforts through the Civilian Commercialization Readiness Pilot Program (CCRPP) awardee, ResilienX.

With the rapid expansion of AAM technology, AFWERXÔÇÖs Airspace Innovation and Prime Partnerships program has joined forces with NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration to address technological and administrative gaps in this field.AFWERX has established partnerships with a Memorandum of Understanding and participation in the AAM Interagency Working Group earlier in 2023 to shape the future of AAM.

The CCRPP is a NASA Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer program designed to infuse mission-relevant technologies with funding to support commercialization.

This system aims to improve base security, special forces operations, disaster response, and passenger and cargo transportation planning. It is also being expanded to include other necessary technologies for air domain awareness.

ResilienX is leading the development of a digital system for AAM operations to ensure comprehensive safety assurance of AAM ecosystems. The project aims to define and integrate an AAM Operations Center that is scalable, tactical, and capable of verifying and validating various systems and sensors involved in uncrewed aerial systems, electric vertical take-off and landing operations, and other advanced aviation technologies. This center will be built in collaboration with NUAIR at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport, with plans to test and expand it to additional locations by 2025.

Each company in the consortium contributes its industry expertise and technological advancements to create the most robust system possible. AFWERX plans to bring in additional industry partners in the next phase to meet emerging requirements from military and other government stakeholders.

The collaborative project utilizes research expertise from NASA and subject matter experts from AFWERX to meet the needs of the emerging field of AAM operations. It is informed by the U.S. Air Force AAM Operations Center requirements through testing and operator interactions.

The first phase of development includes a detailed needs assessment, feature development, initial integration of baseline technologies, and testing. The second phase will involve user testing of human factors, safety development, prototype testing, and a live system demonstration.

ResilienX has received $4.8 million in AFWERX and NASA funding through the CCRPP for this project, which is expected to continue through October 2025.
