Financial Literacy Lessons Provided by Atlanta Nonprofit

Young Men in DeKalb County Gain Valuable Financial Education

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Young men out of DeKalb County have a sharper understanding of money and investments with the guidance of an Atlanta based nonprofit.

Troy Vincent, president-elect of the 100 Black Men DeKalb Chapter, said the groupÔÇÖs financial literacy lessons provide direction and support for young people in the county. The organization is dedicated to reaching back and helping pave the way for these young people, fostering a sense of responsibility and community involvement.

The financial literacy lessons provided for dozens of mentees not only cover the basics of investing, but also delve into the reasons behind investing, helping studentsÔÇöparticularly teenagersÔÇöprepare for their financial futures.

ÔÇ£ThatÔÇÖs what weÔÇÖre looking to do, is to help those young people pass it on to start creating legacy,ÔÇØ said Vincent. ÔÇ£TheyÔÇÖre all our kids ÔÇô any young person. I think you have a responsibility.ÔÇØ

Unfortunately, the number of financially literate adults has dropped 19 percent over the past decade, according to research from Zippia, an online recruiting company. Two-thirds of Gen Z say they are not financially literate. The lessons provided by the 100 Black Men DeKalb Chapter seek to address and reverse this concerning trend.

John Pacely, a mentee in the 100 Black Men DeKalb Chapter, recently received recognition for his understanding of money and markets. Pacely finished second place in the national Wells Fargo Junior Investment Program, a simulation with $100,000 in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, and attributes much of his success to the knowledge gained from the nonprofit.

ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs something we need to give to our children, teach our children, teach our younger selves how to learn,ÔÇØ said Pacely. ÔÇ£How to be financially literate and make decisions that will impact them.ÔÇØ

PacelyÔÇÖs mother, Simone, emphasized the impact of the 100 Black Men DeKalb ChapterÔÇÖs lessons on her sonÔÇÖs financial understanding, stating that the organization offers a unique perspective and angle on financial matters that complement the lessons taught at home.

ÔÇ£The 100 gives a different perspective giving a different angle on things,ÔÇØ said Simone. ÔÇ£When he wants to have a family, he has to pay for his size 15 shoes, the car heÔÇÖs going to drive, his house, the wife, the kids. You have to be financially savvy so you can handle all that without being stressed.

In a world where financial literacy is becoming increasingly important, the work of organizations like the 100 Black Men DeKalb Chapter is crucial in empowering young people with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the future.
