As part of this effort, YouTube will streamline its existing medical misinformation guidelines, categorizing them into three broad areas: Prevention, Treatment, and Denial.

Combating False Claims

YouTube’s updated policies will target specific health conditions, treatments, and substances where content contradicts local health authorities or the World Health Organization (WHO). According to Dr. Graham, the goal is to establish clearer rules and a more transparent framework for evaluating the inclusion of certain diseases or conditions in the future.

Starting immediately and gradually escalating over the next few weeks, YouTube will begin removing content that promotes cancer treatments proven to be harmful or ineffective. Additionally, content that discourages viewers from seeking professional medical treatment will also be targeted. This includes videos promoting unproven treatments as a substitute for approved care or guaranteed cures, as well as treatments explicitly deemed harmful by health authorities. For example, a video suggesting that “garlic cures cancer” or “taking vitamin C instead of radiation therapy” would be deleted.

YouTube also plans to boost cancer-related content from reputable sources such as the Mayo Clinic and other authoritative institutions. This initiative aims to provide users with reliable and accurate information on cancer prevention, treatment, and support.
