UNLV School of Medicine Graduates Walk the Stage

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Members from the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV walked the stage and received their degrees at the Thomas and Mack Center Friday, May 3. The commencement had graduates that arrived on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on public health.

The message from the 61 incredible graduates who are part of UNLV’s fourth ever cohort of medical students was loud and clear – ‘Nevada needs more doctors’. More than half of the 2024 class was matched to residency programs in the Silver State, with 34 of the 61 graduates opting to stay in Nevada. UNLV president Keith E. Whitfield and Kerkorian School of Medicine Dean, Dr. Marc J. Kahn addressed the graduates, acknowledging their hard work and dedication to the field of medicine.

“Having the medical school here and being a public school and taking in local kids that want to stay here and contribute the medicine and not go away,” said Christy Diuguid who was also matched in Southern Nevada.

“My mom actually has her PhD in public health. It’s always been something that interests me and I think that having the COVID-19 pandemic really made me want to go into this field even more,” said Carmen Hollifield, who will be heading to Reno for her residency.

These graduates said they are ready to own their specialties. It includes emergency medicine, psychiatry, internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, anesthesiology, neurology and radiology. All of the students are either from Nevada or have strong ties to the Silver State.
