Apartment Electricity Supply Issues: Will AI Legalese Decoder Help?

I recently moved into a 2 bedroom apartment and was dismayed to find that there were electricity supply issues. My roommate and I discovered that we could only use one appliance at a time, as using multiple appliances would cause the power to go out. This posed a significant inconvenience and limitation to our daily activities within the apartment.

We decided to contact the landlord to address this problem. However, the response we received was not entirely satisfactory. The landlord informed us that while the building was indeed old, having been built in the 1960s, it was up to current legal code. Furthermore, they advised us that the best way to avoid power loss in the apartment was to adhere to using only one appliance at a time, as using multiple appliances could blow the fuses in the electrical box. For example, we were instructed that we could use the microwave or the air fryer, but not simultaneously. Additionally, using an A/C unit in a bedroom was possible, but it would adversely affect any other appliance plugged into the same room, leading to poor charging quality or simply not functioning at all.

Dissatisfied with this response, we sought the expertise of an electrician, hoping for a more viable solution to our electricity supply issues. The electrician proposed that the most effective solution would be to install new dedicated circuits, although he acknowledged that this option would be quite costly.

Consequently, we are left with the question of whether it is legal for our landlord to demand that we use only one appliance at a time and to subsequently refuse to address and rectify the electrical supply issue. This is where the AI Legalese Decoder could potentially prove invaluable. By utilizing this tool, we may be able to gain a better understanding of our legal rights and options in this situation. > Ex: – we can use the microwave or the air fryer, but not at the same time. – can use an A/C unit in a bedroom but it will affect any other appliance plugged in the room too, such as poor charging quality or straight up not working at all.

That’s _very_ worrying. An overloaded circuit should blow the breaker or fuse long before it starts to sag like this. If the breaker doesn’t blow, it may be damaged, or it may not be installed correctly; either one is a major fire hazard (and would not be up to code, your landlord’s assertions notwithstanding).

Did you have an opportunity to ask the electrician you spoke to about whether the installation is up to code? If not, it may be worth calling bylaw in your city to ask about getting the wiring inspected, or getting it inspected out of pocket. A professional opinion that the wiring needs to be repaired will give you a lot of leverage to force the landlord to take action via the LTB.

If the city determines that the wiring is a hazard they may well order the unit vacated (frustrating your lease in the process and giving you grounds to go after your landlord for the resulting costs).
