North Korean hackers at the infamous Lazarus Group have been identified by the FBI as responsible for stealing $41 million worth of cryptocurrency from the online crypto casino Stake.

The attack occurred around September 4 and resulted in the draining of funds from the blockchain networks Ethereum, BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain/BSC), Polygon, and Bitcoin, according to a statement published by the FBI on Wednesday.

The FBI statement provided a list of 33 wallet addresses believed to be associated with the attack and officially attributed it to North Korea’s Lazarus Group, also known as APT38.

Unusual Transactions on Monday

On Monday, the crypto casino Stake, backed by popular rapper Drake, noticed unusual outbound transactions.

These transactions were identified by blockchain security firm PeckShield, which shared a link to the on-chain activity on X.

Other blockchain security firms, such as Beosin, estimated the total loss to be approximately $41.35 million. This includes $15.7 million on Ethereum, $7.8 million on Polygon, and another $17.8 million from Binance Smart Chain.

At the time, this activity raised concerns within the digital asset community, with many viewing it as the latest rugpull amidst declining prices.

Despite the significant loss, Stake resumed its services later that same day, apologizing for any inconvenience experienced by its users.

Since posting the apology on Monday, Stake has not mentioned anything about the hacking incident on its social media channels.

Among the Most Infamous Crypto Hackers

Lazarus Group is widely recognized as one of the largest criminal entities operating in the cryptocurrency space. They are believed to be behind significant hacks, with some of the stolen money allegedly being used to fund North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program.

One of their well-known attacks includes the Ronin bridge hack on Axie Infinity, which the US Treasury Department and FBI have attributed to Lazarus Group.
