Education Frustration: Seeking Accountability for Missing Diploma

As someone who graduated nearly 25 years ago and recently made the courageous decision to pursue further education, I find myself facing an unexpected hurdle. Sadly, I have misplaced my hard-earned diploma and despite my persistent efforts, it remains elusive. Desperate for a solution, I reached out to my college with a request for my transcripts, hoping they would serve as evidence of my graduation. However, to my dismay, my college has refused to provide them due to the absence of a graduation date on the transcripts, leaving me utterly perplexed.

Compounding my distress is the fact that the college in question abruptly closed its doors in 2017. Now, both my home state and the archdiocese office, responsible for overseeing Catholic schools like mine, have shrugged off any responsibility or assistance. They have remorsefully informed me that there is no documentation available to verify my graduation. At 41 years old, the prospect of returning to college was already an intimidating endeavor, but now I find myself disheartened by the additional roadblock in the form of obtaining my GED or high school equivalency. It feels like an uphill battle just to begin my educational journey.

Amidst this frustrating ordeal, I wonder if there is any avenue to hold someone accountable for this situation. It is not solely the mistake and the absence of my diploma that troubles me; it is the apparent indifference displayed by those involved. Shockingly, I have been presented with examples of others facing a similar predicament, only to be left helpless. These instances, which were used to illustrate that “nothing can be done,” further amplify the unjustness of my situation.

Try checking with your state representative’s office. They often have a department for helping constituents deal with bureaucratic issues.

I’m an academic adviser at a large institution in Pennsylvania and have worked with student admissions. Have you tried talking with a local community college to see if you can start there and then transfer to a university? A lot of times a community college is more flexible than a state institution, especially since part of their mission is to serve the community. If you were to earn an AA/AS at the community college, it might negate the need to verify your high school graduation date. It’s obviously not the most direct path but could be your best option. Good luck!

Google ÔÇ£Archdiocese of [City] Schools SuperintendentÔÇØ

Theres usually one or two super organized people and 8 or 9 people who have no idea

How far have you escalated this within the college you want to attend? Have you spoken directly with the dean or director of admissions? Have you contacted the office of *that* person’s boss, like the chancellor or provost or whoever? If this is a public school, you could also contact whatever body in your state regulates public colleges and universities. You could also reach out to your elected state representatives and ask for assistance on how to resolve this bureaucratic problem, even if it’s not a public college at question.

This would not necessarily “hold anyone accountable” because that’s not always really possible, but it may move the needle toward a solution.

Are you able to share the diocese/location? I suspect that there may be more the diocese can do, especially since the school closed relatively recently. If you arenÔÇÖt getting anywhere with whoever you contacted, the diocese will have many employees listed who you may be able to reach out to (chancellor, general counsel, even the bishop if it comes to that).

What specifically was the diocese unable to do? Do they at least have record that you attended the school?

If all else fails and you are in contact with former teachers, students, and priests who witnessed your graduation, it may be worthwhile to see if they will swear under affadavit of your attendance.

You may otherwise need to seek the services of a lawyer to contact the archdiocese office on your behalf. Nothing gets action faster than a request on legal letterhead.

The newspaper in my hometown published the names of the whole graduating class. Maybe you could find that.

  • aarf26

Practical advice: You might try looking through the town library’s newspaper archives (or do a free trial of [Newspapers.com](https://Newspapers.com)) Your name and the school you attended might have been mentioned because of sports, academic awards, graduation, etc. That might at least show the admissions office the timeframe, based on newspaper date.

Just take the GED. It’s a very basic multiple choice test that takes a few hours at most. Some community colleges guarantee acceptance to their college if you pass the GED in the same state. Unless you really struggle with a certain GED subject (math, language arts, science, social studies) you really don’t need to do GED prep classes, a practice test book will give you a good idea of where you’re at.
