California Insurance Agent Charged with Theft and Forgery

Erin Lee McCarroll, a 49-year-old insurance agent from Laguna Beach, California, was arraigned on 27 felony counts, including grand theft and forgery. The victims of McCarroll’s scheme were primarily contractors and small business owners who are legally required to carry workers’ compensation coverage for their employees. Additionally, they had also paid McCarroll for general liability policies, which she never obtained on their behalf. To deceive her victims, McCarroll fabricated and issued fraudulent certificates of insurance. These certificates were then used by the victims to satisfy contract requirements that mandated proof of proper insurance coverage. As a result, the victims believed they had obtained the insurance policies they purchased from McCarroll, unaware of the deceit.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution of the case against McCarroll.
