California Insurance Agent Charged with Theft and Forgery

Erin Lee McCarroll, a 49-year-old insurance agent from Laguna Beach, California, was arraigned on 27 felony counts, including grand theft and forgery. The charges stem from an investigation conducted by the California Department of Insurance (CDI), which discovered that McCarroll had allegedly stolen more than $62,000 in insurance premiums from at least 10 business owners in California.

The investigation was initiated after the CDI received numerous consumer complaints against McCarroll, who operated under the name Erin McCarroll Insurance Services. According to the complaints, McCarroll accepted premium payments from policyholders but misappropriated the funds for personal expenses instead of forwarding them to the insurance companies.

Between June 2017 and November 2019, McCarroll failed to forward premium payments totaling over $62,000 from at least 10 victims. As a result, the policyholders believed they had insurance coverage that was never placed, leaving them vulnerable to potential financial losses.

The victims of McCarroll’s scheme were primarily contractors and small business owners who are legally required to carry workers’ compensation coverage for their employees. Additionally, they had also paid McCarroll for general liability policies, which she never obtained on their behalf. The absence of these policies exposed the victims to the possibility of uncovered claims and significant financial damages.

To deceive her victims, McCarroll fabricated and issued fraudulent certificates of insurance. These certificates were then used by the victims to satisfy contract requirements that mandated proof of proper insurance coverage. As a result, the victims believed they had obtained the insurance policies they purchased from McCarroll, unaware of the deceit.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution of the case against McCarroll.
