Stock Football: University Team Excels On and Off the Field

University football coach Ben Malbasa is not only proud of his team’s performance on the gridiron, but also their achievements in the classroom.

For the ninth consecutive year, the University SchoolÔÇÖs football team has been recognized as academic All-Ohio by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association. What’s more, four seniors on the team have been named individual academic All-Ohioans.

Julian Berger, Jackson Boland, Duke Brennan, and Sean Fioritto’s individual recognition has made the academic All-Ohio honor even more special to Malbasa and his staff. According to Malbasa, “Those are just awesome guys. Simply great kids. This is one of my favorite groups IÔÇÖve ever coached.”

The University team’s success in the classroom leads an impressive list of area players and teams that were recently honored by the state coaches association. Other teams getting All-Ohio nods as a squad were Riverside, Kenston, Hawken, North, and Chagrin Falls. Individual All-Ohioans from the region include ChagrinÔÇÖs Duncan Scott and Luke Neimeier, HawkenÔÇÖs Luke Mangini and Paxon Laschinger, and Lake CatholicÔÇÖs Greg Bares and Josh Styles.

Being eligible for Academic All-Ohio honors as a team requires the coach to compile the top 22 letterwinnersÔÇÖ grade-point averages on an unweighted GPA scale. Individual Academic All-Ohioans must have an unweighted GPA of over 3.6 and be all-conference or all-district selections.

Ultimately, academic success in addition to athletic achievement is highly emphasized in the participating schools. Chagrin Falls coach John Scott acknowledged, ÔÇ£It truly is being a student first in ÔÇÿstudent-athlete.ÔÇÖ We really focus on making sure you take care of things in the classroom.ÔÇØ

Lake Catholic coach Marty Gibbons also stressed the importance of academic achievement, “Schoolwork matters to these guys.”

Moreover, University has had an Academic All-Ohio team for nine years in a row, while Riverside made the grade for the fourth consecutive year and Hawken is also a repeat honoree.
