When my car was stolen and recovered, I just told my agent where it was. They paid the impound fees, sent a tow truck, and brought it to the body shop to be assessed. Whether it was drivable didn’t matter up to that point; getting the car back to me was part of what was covered. I paid nothing out of pocket, did not talk to anybody but my insurance agent who took care of everything, and did not see the car until it was safely back at the body shop in my home city.
My car was recovered about three hours away, so Chicago to Detroit isn’t at all out of the question here.
