Title: AI Legalese Decoder: Your Solution for Unfamiliar Medical Bills and Potential Debt Collection

Introduction:
In a surprising turn of events, I recently received a medical bill from a clinic I visited in January 2016. The document, dated 12/1/2017, startled me as it contained stamped information indicating the involvement of a collections agency. What perplexes me further is that this is the first instance I have learned of any outstanding balance. To complicate matters, I have relocated twice since my visit, and the bill is addressed to my childhood home. Here, I will delve into the legality of the situation and how the AI Legalese Decoder can support me in navigating this intricate dilemma effectively.

Exploring the legal dimension:
The crux of this predicament lies in understanding whether the clinic and the collections agency are legally permitted to attempt to collect the debt from me. To ascertain the validity of their actions, we need to consider the following geographical aspects: the office is located in Utah, the collections agency in Oklahoma, while I currently reside in Texas.

All they can do is ask nicely.

They can’t put it on your credit report and likely it’s too old to sue you for it.

If you *really* like the doctor and it’s not a huge about you can go ahead and pay it, but personally I’d just toss it out.

  • howsadley

Given the age of the debt, the doctorÔÇÖs office probably sold the debt to a collection agency for pennies. The agency is now doing a ÔÇ£Hail MaryÔÇØ attempt to see if you will pay up even though the debt is essentially uncollectible. Pull a fresh credit report. Is this debt on it? No? Go in peace.

Do not contact them. Do not take their calls. Do not pay.

  • lokie65

If you were 12 when the debt was incurred you are not legally, morally, or realistically responsible for it. Throw it in the trash and move on.

  • Jacaranda18

It could be a scam. A lot of hospital systems have patient information stolen and people start receiving fraudulent bills. They are often small so that people just pay. Call the clinic to inquire about the bill. Check the HHS.gov website to see if there was a data breach too. All data breaches are posted there.

The statue of limitations for collecting a debt in Utah is 6 years, so you’re all clear. (In Oklahoma and Texas it’s even shorter)

  • ItzKCase

Something like this happened to me. Got a bill 2 years after surgery for like $600. There’s a law that they have 7 months i think to send you a medical bills. You’d have to look it up. I called ST. Davids (also in Texas) and basically told them about the law i found. Got a letter a few weeks later saying my balance was $0.00

  • TsuruXelus

Well it takes 7 years for medical debt to fall off credit. So most likely another collection agency bought the debt, and its about to fall off your credit in january of 2024. So they are trying to get you to pay it before that happens, and you’ll no longer care.

  • SeaSleep1972

Do not contact them if itÔÇÖs on your credit report!

  • lonely40m

Bro, the bill is $60 and I am more impressed that they even bothered to find you after all this time for that amount of money. I’d pay it just to talk to a Dr. for a while, maybe has had been wanting to tell you something but couldn’t contact you because you were a minor.

  • Mean_Anything_1061

They canÔÇÖt report it to your credit because itÔÇÖs been to long. If you make a payment you accept responsibility and they can report it to the credit bureau.
