Title: Disappointment with the Outcome of Laptop Damage Report: AI Legalese Decoder to the Rescue
Introduction:
Recently, I had sent my laptop for a damage report as requested by Vero, through Connect NZ. However, upon receiving the outcome via email, I couldn’t help but feel unsatisfied and disappointed. In this extended content, I will discuss the details of the settlement offered and how AI Legalese Decoder can come to the rescue in such situations.
The Age Dilemma:
Having purchased my laptop in 2018, I personally don’t consider it to be super old, although the perspective of tech experts might differ. It is disheartening to see that the age of the device is being used as a determining factor in the settlement process. While I can understand the need for policy guidelines, it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Insight into the Proposed Settlement:
The email received from Vero contained the proposed settlement, based on the report they received from Connect NZ. To adhere to their policy obligations, Vero decides to cash settle the indemnity value, deducting the excess amount specified in the policy. Below is a summarized breakdown of the proposed settlement:
– Indemnity value: $522.95
– Less excess: $250.00
– Total cash settlement: $272.95
Insufficient Settlement and Lost Possessions:
Upon assessing the settlement amount, it becomes evident that it falls significantly short of covering the cost of a new laptop. Additionally, the disappointment intensifies as I am not even provided the option to retrieve my damaged laptop. It truly feels like experiencing a double loss in this situation.

****** just grabbed a
If itÔÇÖs the non Apple silicon machines the valuation might make sense. The price of older MacBooks has dropped a lot since Apple release their own silicon
“Indemnity value: $522.95”
Look up indemnity value.
It’s basically the lowest second hand value for what you had.
Different from replacement value. Which would be the cost of a new one. Change to a policy that covers replacement value if that’s what you’re after.
Good luck
It looks like you purchased the macbook in 2018 but its actually a 2015 model?
If so, you should take the cash settlement and if you wanted to, jump on trademe and you can pick one up for that price
e.g.
[https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/laptops/laptops/apple/listing/4255164945](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/laptops/laptops/apple/listing/4255164945)
[https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/laptops/laptops/apple/listing/4252250351](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/laptops/laptops/apple/listing/4252250351)

DonÔÇÖt accept the settlement, get the MacBook back and see if someone around local can fix for cheaper.. I doubt the claim would be worth losing your no claims bonus next renewal?
That sucks and I can imagine how you must be feeling.
You might need to upgrade your policy type to replacement value. It wonÔÇÖt help with the MacBook but will mean you get full replacement if you have anything written off in future.
How much was it new?
Yeah, account devaluation of laptops is FAST. Far faster than I personally would get rid of them. And as you imply, there is no way you could pick up a five year old one for that on TM.
A. You only paid premiums for indemnity value for computers this old.
B. Given that your MacBook is ancient, $500 to $600 seems about right. Take a look on trade me for an idea, if 2018 macbooks ( the same spec as yours) are selling for that range then it’s a fair offer.
Apple computers are prone to breaking and Apple does everything they can to make it impossible to fix (see millions of “rights to repair” videos on Youtube).
Why do they do it? Because people like you buy their devices for premium price no matter how the company behaves, so if you want to blame someone the person to blame isn’t Vero or Apple but yourself
Could this be the opening salvo in a negotiation?
You can fight this. I would try two things:
* See if you can still order these off of apple. Send them the link and say ‘this is the replacement cost for my mac and this is how much it would cost’. Sometimes they say ‘or equivalent’ in the contract and in that case check what the oldest model is on the apple website that yo u can buy.
* If they come back saying it’s for used only go on trademe and find what people are selling them for and quote them that. Just look for the most expensive listing that says ‘excellent condition’. Make sure you stress your laptop was in excellent condition.
I’ve been screwed before. Do not sign anything until you get what you believe to be reasonable.
