I’m in a similar boat, I didn’t realize that my drinking and lack of sleep were related to PTSD because I never remember my nightmares and I don’t have them as much as thought. but, you should for sure call the VA or walk in and get help first, and then worry about the claim. You can also go tell a Veteran Service Rep that you want to file an “Intent to file” and then you have 1 year to file a claim and if you get any money, the payment will back date you to the day you filled out the “intent to file” form.

Get help first, you for sure need some if you have nightmares and drinking that interferes with other aspects of your life.

You don’t file for ptsd unless you’ve been diagnosed, but you should for sure file for the nightmares and depression, whatever other mental health symptoms you have.

When you file for symptoms instead of a diagnosis, we send you to get checked out to see if there is one.

I also got out in 2012, lied about being totally fine, no problems after coming home because the stigma, self medicated over a decade before I finally sought help. After about a year of treatment from the VA I filed for PTSD (after getting the diagnosis) and was granted 70%. So the time you’ve been out doesn’t matter as long as you have everything else in order, namely an actively diagnosis.

Could claim depression, anxiety, nightmares, alcohol dependency too when you’re ready. There’s some good programs through the VA, Vet Centers, and Wounded Warriors that may be helpful too. Good luck.

I did the same. I got out in 97 and filed first claim in 2013. I had no clue what I was doing, I am surprised that I got anything at all when I received 40%. Gathered more evidence and became more organized and submitted another claim 1 year later, was bumped up to 60%. Did the same thing again adding in claims for other conditions that I had forgotten to apply for or thought I would never get 2 years later, and moved up to 80%. Finally, about 2 years later of continuing to collect detailed evidence and how the conditions related to my time in service, including multiple buddy letters, medical records from physicians outside the VA as well as inside the VA for a timespan of records of about a decade back, I got 100% P&T. It was a lot of work, I won’t lie, but the persistence over time to continue to file claims even though I was tired of the tedious process and the waits as I learned more and more was worth it to receive deserved benefits due. Hang in there. You’ve got this.

Seek help, file and keep driving on. I recently began this process myself and it is long overdue. As I get older without a family to raise, etc my mind tends to do things, emotions out of control and so forth more frequently. Of course in the beginning it was out of control and certain triggers refresh episodes and compound issues.

I got out in 2005 and just now in 2024 file for the first time. I got 90% I did everything myself and this sub was a huge help.

Ouch, that’s over 10 years of no back pay & missing out $. 😥

Getting help and filing a claim is a good start. Take your time with your statement for your claim. I recommend a week, as you won’t be able to capture everything in a few hours. File for Mental Health as well. It does not carry the same stigma as it once was and contrary to rumors, it will not impact your job or clearance.
