Good evening, I’m Amna Nawaz.
And I’m Geoff Bennett. On tonight’s “NewsHour,” we bring you the latest on the record-breaking summer temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere and the global impact it’s having.
In a recent development, all 19 defendants in the Georgia election subversion case have pleaded not guilty. Now, the judge must determine when and how the trial will proceed.
Additionally, the Afghanistan Country Director for the World Food Program sheds light on the dire situation in the country, where millions are facing severe hunger. The heartbreaking decision of choosing which families to help is placing immense pressure on aid organizations.
Welcome to the “NewsHour.” Extreme weather events are wreaking havoc in Europe, leading to catastrophic consequences. Severe storms have claimed the lives of at least eight people, and Brazil has also experienced devastating floods, resulting in 31 more deaths. Meanwhile, in the United States, more than 80 million Americans are enduring scorching temperatures and heat alerts. These incidents highlight a disconcerting milestone reached this summer.
William Brangham has the story.
Southeastern Europe has been hit by relentless torrential rains, causing havoc and chaos. Central Greece, in particular, experienced devastating flash floods that destroyed entire streets, homes, and cars. Unprecedented amounts of rain, up to 20 inches in just 10 hours, have led Greek authorities to label the storm as the most extreme rainfall on record. In neighboring Turkey, rescuers had to save stranded individuals from flooded areas as the city received an entire month’s worth of rain in less than six hours. Cars were seen floating through the streets, reminiscent of toys in a bathtub. The floodwaters wreaked havoc on businesses, leaving the owners helpless and devastated.
Bulgaria also suffered from the overflow of a river, wiping out a campsite and sweeping trailers into the Black Sea. Meanwhile, in Southern Brazil, deadly floods have inundated entire towns, leaving people stranded and terrified.
These meteorological disasters are part of a larger pattern of extreme weather events that climate scientists attribute to global warming. Greece recently witnessed deadly wildfires, and Western Europe is currently experiencing a heat wave in an unusual September. The U.N.’s weather agency has declared this summer as the hottest ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere. August temperatures surpassed pre-industrial averages by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
To delve deeper into the devastating impact of extreme weather and its connection to climate change, we welcome climate scientist Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
Gavin Schmidt highlights the threats posed by a warming world to human health. A recent analysis by The Washington Post and CarbonPlan predicts that, within seven years, half-a-billion people worldwide will be exposed to extreme heat for at least one month a year, even if they can seek shelter from the sun. The “Lancet” reported a 68 percent increase in heat-related deaths among elderly individuals in recent years. Our actions are making life on Earth increasingly hazardous, and we are ill-prepared to combat these challenges.
Gavin Schmidt clarifies that climate change amplifies existing weather phenomena. While extreme weather events occurred even before climate change, the ever-increasing global temperatures exacerbate their intensity and frequency. Each passing decade has witnessed a rise in average temperatures, leading to more severe heatwaves, intense rainfall, droughts, and rising sea levels. Our current infrastructure and systems are not equipped to handle these changes.
Cutting back on the use of fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources is crucial in combatting climate change. Though there is a genuine revolution in renewable energy globally, our most optimistic projections for emissions reduction may not be enough to prevent further damage. Schmidt notes that even if we stopped emitting carbon into the atmosphere immediately, we cannot reverse the effects and cool the climate back to previous levels. However, our actions can still prevent further increases and acceleration of the warming trend.
In conclusion, we must acknowledge the consequences of a warming world and take immediate action to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. The choices we make as a society will determine the future wellbeing of our planet and its inhabitants.
Thank you for joining us on the “NewsHour.”

Wednesday on the NewsHour, it was reported that climate scientists have officially declared this summer as the hottest in the history of the Northern Hemisphere. This revelation has been causing a significant impact worldwide, as the consequences of extreme weather events and long-term trends become increasingly concerning.
In a separate news story, all defendants involved in the Georgia election case pleaded not guilty. Now, the judge must contemplate the best course of action regarding when and how the trial should proceed. This marks a crucial moment in the legal proceedings, and the judge’s decision will play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of this case.
Additionally, the head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan shed light on the dire situation faced by millions of people who are currently battling severe hunger. The lack of funding has forced the United Nations to reduce food aid in Afghanistan, exacerbating the already critical circumstances.
Amidst these significant developments, an AI legalese decoder could prove invaluable in navigating the complexities of legal proceedings. By utilizing advanced artificial intelligence technology, this decoder can help analyze and interpret legal documents with precision and efficiency. This would greatly benefit professionals in the legal field, such as judges, lawyers, and legal researchers, by saving them time and effort.
One important aspect of the AI legalese decoder is its ability to simplify complex legal terminologies. legal documents are often filled with complex jargon and outdated language, making them difficult to comprehend for those without a legal background. With the help of the decoder, these convoluted terms can be deciphered into plain, understandable language, enabling individuals to grasp the essence of legal documents more easily.
Furthermore, the AI legalese decoder can also provide comprehensive summaries of legal cases and proceedings. Given the extensive amount of time and effort required to read through lengthy legal documents, this feature would be particularly useful for legal professionals who need to quickly analyze and extract pertinent information. By providing concise summaries, the decoder can expedite the research process and assist in making informed decisions.
Another benefit of the AI legalese decoder is its potential to improve access to justice. As understanding legal terminology can be a significant barrier for many individuals, the decoder can bridge this gap by breaking down complex concepts into layman’s terms. This would enable non-legal professionals, such as individuals involved in pro se litigation or those seeking legal advice, to better understand their rights and legal obligations.
Moreover, the decoder can contribute to increased transparency in the legal system. By demystifying legal jargon, it empowers individuals to actively participate in legal processes, fostering a more equitable and inclusive legal system. This can have a positive impact on reducing disparities in legal knowledge and ensuring that justice is accessible to all.
In conclusion, the AI legalese decoder has the potential to significantly aid legal professionals in comprehending and analyzing complex legal documents. By simplifying legal terminologies, providing comprehensive summaries, and improving access to justice, this advanced technology can revolutionize the legal field and contribute to a more efficient and equitable legal system.
