Greetings, today is Tuesday, July 18th, and you’re watching Africa 54. In recent news, Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea grain deal with Ukraine has sent shockwaves throughout some of the world’s poorest countries. On a positive note, a new report by UNAIDS states that significant progress has been made in combating HIV/AIDS since the peak of the epidemic. Stay tuned for more updates.
The recent announcement of Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea grain deal with Ukraine has created uncertainty in Somalia and other poverty-stricken nations. The Black Sea grain initiative, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022, has been beneficial for countries like Somalia. It allowed Ukrainian grain to be exported from Black Sea ports, leading to a decrease in global food prices and improved access for aid agencies in dire need of food supplies. However, with Russia’s withdrawal, access to food becomes more limited and affordability becomes a major concern due to the resulting price increases.
Russia’s decision to quit the pact stems from its dissatisfaction with the lack of improvement in its own exports and the perceived insufficient distribution of grain to poor countries. The United Nations counters these claims, stating that poor nations benefitted from the deal by experiencing a significant reduction in food prices globally. It is predicted that staple food prices will rise as a result of Russia’s withdrawal, as the global grain availability was largely improved by producers like Russia and Brazil.
Addressing the impact of this development, I am joined live from New York by VOA’s United Nations correspondent, Margaret Bishir. Margaret shares that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is extremely disappointed with Russia’s refusal to extend the deal. The UN has invested significant time, effort, and its reputation into this project, which aims to combat the growing issue of hunger faced by 345 million people worldwide. The consequences of Russia’s stance include higher food prices and potential availability issues. Wheat, corn, and soybean prices have already experienced a noticeable jump on commodity markets following the news of Russia’s withdrawal. This increase in prices poses challenges for aid agencies such as the World Food Program, which are already grappling with funding shortages and are now faced with the task of finding new suppliers due to their reliance on Ukrainian grain.
Moreover, the effects of Russia’s stance will be felt not only by Ukraine but also by Africa and Western Asia. These regions are major markets for Ukrainian grain, and the rise in prices will impact everyone, including vulnerable populations. Staple foods like bread and pasta will become more expensive, affecting the affordability of basic necessities for many.
In other news, Libyan border guards have rescued dozens of migrants who were abandoned in the desert without water and food by Tunisian authorities. These migrants fled or were forced out of Tunisia’s Stark City following escalated racial tensions after the killing of a Tunisian man. The rescued migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa, were taken to a hostile area in Libya or Algeria by Tunisian police. They were found exhausted and dehydrated, seeking shelter from the scorching summer heat. The women and children among them faced further struggles in the reception center due to the increasing number of immigrants arriving daily. Around 70 to 50 migrants are being rescued, with the numbers fluctuating. Healthcare, relief assistance, and first aid are being provided to them.
Switching gears, the Women Deliver 2023 conference is currently taking place in Rwanda, focusing on gender equality, technology, innovation, and youth advancement programs. This conference brings together participants from various sectors, including the private sector and grassroots advocates. To shed more light on the conference, we have Noshaba Zafar, the Senior Technical Advisor at Carlos International, joining us live via Skype from Kigali, Rwanda.
The name “Women Deliver” signifies the need for spaces where women can connect and find solutions to the gender challenges they face globally. Gender-based discrimination knows no boundaries in terms of race, color, or age, and women require platforms to stand together in solidarity, share their stories, and catalyze collective actions to advance gender equality. It is essential to hold leaders and policymakers accountable for creating policies that empower women.
