During the night, a Russian rocket struck an apartment building in the city of Leviv, causing significant casualties. The mayor of Leviv shared on Telegram that the attack has tragically resulted in four deaths and left eight individuals injured. Concerns are rising that there may still be people trapped under the debris. Aerial images depict the extent of the destruction, with the top floor and the roof of the building completely torn apart by the powerful explosion. It is important to note that Leviv is located hundreds of kilometers away from the front lines, and the region has been relatively peaceful since the invasion began.
We now turn to our correspondent, Gordon Carrera, who is reporting from Kiev. Gordon, the map we just saw demonstrates the considerable distance between Leviv and the front line. How do attacks like this on civilian areas in Leviv impact the morale of the entire nation?
Indeed, Celia, when Leviv experiences such attacks, it tends to have a more profound shock effect due to its comparative rarity. Although there have been other missile and drone strikes recently, such as the one in Sumi on Monday that claimed three lives and the attack in Crematorsk last week where 13 people were killed at a pizza restaurant, these incidents occurred much closer to the active combat zones in the east. Therefore, the dramatic visuals displaying the damage inflicted on the residential apartment building in Leviv are likely to induce a significant degree of shock. President Zelensky has already vowed to respond tangibly to this act of aggression.
However, it remains to be seen what measures Ukraine can genuinely take to prevent or react to such attacks. Presumably, they will need to strengthen their firepower on the front lines. Can you shed some light on their defensive and responsive strategies?
Certainly, Celia. In terms of defense, Ukraine is primarily focusing on enhancing its air defense systems. In fact, just minutes ago, the Ukrainian Air Forces announced that they successfully detected and neutralized seven out of ten launched caliber missiles overnight. Unfortunately, it appears that one of those missiles struck the aforementioned residential building. While air defenses have proven effective against drones, intercepting missiles is more challenging. On the responsive front, Ukraine has employed various tactics, including clandestine actions within Russia itself, although official acknowledgment is rare. Additionally, they continue their ongoing counter-offensive within the country, which is progressing gradually, albeit slowly. It is important to note that this is still early in their pushback against Russian forces.
As the upcoming NATO Summit approaches, what are the key objectives for Ukraine? What are they hoping to achieve in terms of support and security commitments from NATO?
The Ukrainian government has two primary goals in mind for the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius. Firstly, they seek to acquire more advanced weaponry and increased ammunition to bolster their defense capabilities. Secondly, they aim to secure long-term security commitments, potentially even NATO membership, or at the very least, assurances from NATO regarding enhanced support. This will contribute to a greater sense of security for Ukraine. Therefore, these objectives define the focus of the discussions and negotiations at the upcoming summit.
