The situation in Kenya is becoming increasingly concerning as instances of state-sanctioned violence and theft are being inflicted upon citizens who are simply exercising their constitutional rights to protest, gather, and present petitions. Countless families are now grieving and preparing to bury their loved ones who have tragically become victims of the excessive force used by police officers.

In addition to the lives lost, many individuals are currently in hospitals, nursing the wounds caused by police brutality. The injured have suffered from gunshot wounds, arrows, and pangas, with some of the victims being young school boys and girls who had no involvement in the demonstrations. Furthermore, hundreds of people find themselves detained in overcrowded police cells or facing court proceedings for simply exercising their legitimate rights.

It is deeply concerning to note that among those in police custody is our respected Member of Parliament for Mavoko, the Honorable Patrick Macau. Additionally, we have recently been informed of the arrest of the esteemed Wycliffe and Betsa or Parana. We demand the immediate and unconditional dropping of all charges against Honorable Macau, Honorable Parana, and anyone else arrested for participating in constitutionally protected acts of protest against unjust policies.

The purpose of our gathering here today is to condemn the senseless brutality and state-sanctioned execution of civilians by the police. This brutal treatment of citizens has sadly become normalized within Kenyan society, an alarming fact that cannot be overlooked. It is deeply distressing that innocent and law-abiding citizens are continuously subjected to police violence.

Yesterday, the brutality reached new heights of notoriety when the police not only fired bullets at citizens who had gathered for a rally in Cancunji, miles away from the city center, but they also launched tear gas into a primary school here in Nairobi. This shameful act exposed our vulnerable and innocent children to mortal danger, children who had no association with the protests and were merely attending school. It is evident that this brutality is not sporadic but rather deliberately coordinated, and even targeted towards specific ethnic groups.

In light of these unacceptable circumstances, we urgently call for action to address the pervasive police brutality and restore the safety and security of our citizens. The rights enshrined in our constitution must be protected and respected, and the impunity enjoyed by those responsible for these acts of violence must come to an end. It is our collective responsibility to fight for justice and ensure that such incidents no longer plague our nation.
