Thank you Brian Cheung for your contribution. I would like to introduce Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su to discuss the situation at hand. Thank you, Madam Secretary, for joining us. I would like to know your main takeaway from today’s jobs report.

Thank you for having me. It’s great to be here. My takeaway from today’s jobs report is that it is a positive one. The report indicates steady and stable growth, along with a 3.6% unemployment rate. It is important to note that our predictions did not anticipate the unemployment rate dropping below 4% this quickly. This serves as a sign that President Biden’s economic policies and his vision for the economy are effective. We are on track, and the 3.6% unemployment rate marks the 17th consecutive month of unemployment remaining below 4%, which is the longest duration since the 1960s. This report reflects steady and stable growth, which is a positive outcome.

Despite economists predicting a cooldown and increased unemployment, the labor market continues to demonstrate resilience, as you pointed out. Does this imply that we are safe from a major spike in unemployment?

Well, one thing that we can observe is that there is great confidence in the economy. Labor force participation rates have returned to pre-pandemic levels across the board. For women, this is the third straight month of the highest labor force participation rate for prime age working individuals, specifically those between 25 and 54 years old, in 75 years. Women are actively participating in the labor market, and job opportunities are increasing. All of these aspects align with President Biden’s vision for the economy, known as “Bidenomics.”

Can we conclude that a recession is unlikely?

I cannot make predictions, but it is worth mentioning that inflation has decreased significantly. Inflation is now half of what it was a year ago. When we consider President Biden’s approach of investing in America, focusing on industries such as semiconductors, infrastructure, manufacturing, and clean energy, along with investing in American workers and increasing competition to lower prices, we see that these measures are working. These actions contribute to both economic security and growth in our economy.

The markets are reacting to today’s news, with slight declines this morning. Wall Street expects another interest rate hike, and mortgage and credit card rates are already rising. This is negatively impacting many Americans. What is the solution?

You are correct in recognizing the pain that many Americans are experiencing. It is important to remember that just three years ago, we were in the midst of a pandemic and the economic crisis that accompanied it. In my opinion, part of the solution lies in continuing to follow President Biden’s agenda. We need to complete the job of creating good jobs in communities across the country. By doing so, we can create pathways for individuals who have been marginalized in the labor market, enabling them to access these quality jobs. Additionally, we must prioritize efforts to decrease inflation and bring down the rising costs of living for all Americans.
