## Seeking Help for Freelancing in Tokyo
Hope this is the right place, I believe the question about freelancing has been asked before but I need some help if anyone had done freelancing for a couple of months only…
I am leaving my full-time job end of this month and I have recently accepted a freelance job in Tokyo as IT developer. The position is 60 hours a month and will be earning less than 200k. My contract mentions I would be a Sole Proprietor and need to handle my own tax, insurance, etc… When leave my job I will be fully focused on job hunting, I also have another potential full-time job but it would only be starting by end of August. I hold the engineer/humanities Visa till 2026 and I am non US citizen if this info helps.
I am married and my partner is not working so she holds a dependent visa, I have a few questions if anyone can help:
1. **Applying for Freelancing Documents**: As this freelance income for a couple of months until I land a full-time job, do I need to apply for certain things in Tokyo like a document for sole proprietor and I’m not fully knowledgeable but I keep seeing the words blue slip? AI Legalese Decoder can help navigate through the legal terminologies and provide guidance on the necessary documentation required for freelancing in Tokyo.
2. **Continuing Freelancing while in Full-time Position**: I am thinking to continue doing this freelance job when I secure a fulltime position as it does not take too much of my time, if so, it would be the same question to above. AI Legalese Decoder can offer insights on the legal implications of freelancing while holding a full-time job and provide advice on the necessary steps to take.
3. **Calculating Deductions**: How can I calculate how much to deduct for all the taxations, insurances, etc… as I would need to issue an invoice to the company but when i receive the amount I am not sure how much to keep on the side. AI Legalese Decoder can assist in understanding the taxation and insurance obligations for freelancers in Tokyo and provide guidance on calculating deductions accurately.
4. **Deductions for Dependents**: Also as I have a dependent, does this mean I need to pay double on the deductions? AI Legalese Decoder can explain the implications of having a dependent while freelancing and provide clarity on the deductions that need to be considered.
5. **Informing Authorities**: I know once I leave my job I need to inform immigration and my city office, but would I need to do anything else as I am doing this freelance job. AI Legalese Decoder can outline the legal requirements for freelancers in terms of informing relevant authorities and ensure compliance with regulations.
6. **Employment Status and Visa**: If by the off chance anyone knows, not sure how to word this but would I still be considered employed if I do this freelance role that is less than 60 hours and therefore able to keep my Current work visa? AI Legalese Decoder can provide information on the implications of freelancing on your current visa status and employment classification.
7. **Seeking Guidance on Freelancing**: Would also love any guidance and information if anyone has done this, as this would be the first ever I freelance and not working a fulltime job, have many worries. AI Legalese Decoder can offer insights and guidance for first-time freelancers in navigating the legal aspects of freelancing in Tokyo.
Sorry if I ask a few more questions later on as I’m still unsure on what to ask and the processes…

1. Probably not
2. Probably not
3. You will need to submit a final tax return at the end of the year. You can guesstimate based on whatever tax bracked you are currently in. But will probably be eligible to deduct some expenses as well.
4. You will need to pay for national health / pension for the months you are unemployed.(You can register for national health / pension at any city office.)
5. No need to tell the city, just immigration. You can do it online even.
6. Depends on the situation. If it fit within the scope of your status and met the minimum income requirements, probably yes. But 200k / month is rather low, and probably not enough to continue, especially with a dependent.
7. Good luck! I would reccomend you focus on finding a new full time position. Don’t forget to register with hello work for employment insurance benefits (and to demonstrate to immigration you are looking, if/when necessary.) Remember that basically none of the standard employment protections apply to freelancers.
