## Seeking Advice on Options Moving Forward

Hello, I am seeking some advice regarding the situation we are currently facing. Recently, we experienced a leak from the shower that unfortunately leaked into the kitchen below, causing flooding. Even though a plumber has come and resealed the shower, we have been informed that we are unable to use it for at least 72 hours.

With three individuals residing in the house and only having access to this one shower, the inconvenience is significant. Is there any type of compensation that we can potentially apply for in this scenario?

They resolved the issue quickly, sending the plumber out, the 72 hours is unfortunate but in nobodies control, eat this one, don’t apply or claim anything.

  • dankruaus

They fixed it quickly. Just wash yourself using the sink for a couple of days. You’ll live.

I’m guessing the time spent getting reimbursed is going to outweigh the value of the reimbursement. Depends how much your time is worth I suppose.

    mate, don’t be an arsehole.

yes it’s super inconvenient but it’s no-ones fault.

the landlord is doing the right thing.

just do a poor man’s bath. USE the sink. you still get access to the sink.

if you need to wash your hair. use the sink.

I am from South East Asia. in south East Asia.. they are have wet bathrooms. you use a bucket to shower. lol you don’t even have a damn seperate shower area so depending on where the shower is located in your bathroom and how big your Bathroom is. technically you can do a proper whole body shower and soap with just a bucket of water as long as the water doesn’t go near the shower area. if you are super careful not splashing water around. you can technically do this as well but if you can’t then just do a poor man’s shower in the sink.

    (I am a renter)

I’d just rather have the shower fixed. I view these as actions to keep “in the bank” with the REA and I wouldn’t claim anything.

This is not worth not having your lease renewed when your contract is over. Choose a different hill to die on.

  • Ok-Motor18523

You can ask for about $50 back for loss of amenity. Depends on your rent.

Not worth your time and hassle to deal with the real estate.

Shower at work? Gym? Go for a swim? 😂

  • InkMcSquiddin

    Depends!

If it was damage caused by the occupant, you don’t really have a claim.

If it was fair ware and tear; you can request a temporary rent reduction for the resealing period, the amount would depend on how much rent you’re paying. A temporary reduction is done through your Real Estate.

Another option is a compensation claim (for gym fees if you had to shower at the gym, or anything like that) through VCAT. This is done by notifying the Real Estate in writing that if they don’t compensate you, you’ll apply to VCAT. This is probably a little combative, and may not work out in your favour, if the RE fixed the shower promptly and correctly.

It’s a bit of a weird one, because the RE have fulfilled their duty to repair the fault, and them fulfilling their duty has caused you to be without a shower for a few days…

  • According-Charity226

I don’t think that’s a good idea. Obviously you don’t want to be walked over as a renter, but this seems quite petty and is only going to harm your relationship with the owner / REA.

  • Raida7s

If you didn’t cause the leak, or caused it to be a buffer issues due to bending to report it:

Ask the real estate for a rent reduction of fifty bucks.

If they say no, well you tried.

If you cannot access a shower at the gym or work it a mate’s place, then bathe via washers and bucket

Similar thing happened to friends of ours last year. We let them come over and shower for a few days and they brought us dinner and a nice bottle of wine as thanks on the last night.

They didn’t bother trying to deal with the RE/landlord as they got the issue fixed quickly and the wait time was out of everybody’s control.

  • toomanyusernames4rl

    No.

  • CathoftheNorth

I’m a renter. When my shower has been out in the past, I just took myself and the kids to my mums/friends’ houses for showers for a cpl days.

It’s no big deal, and it can’t be helped.

If you don’t want to go back to competing for a rental, I’d just say thank you very much to your REA and Landlord for attending to it so quickly.

    Gratitude over anger always wins!

  • ahmbms

Shower at the gym/work/mate’s place. It’s what I did when this happened

  • Party_Thanks_9920
