Pew Research has a calculator that let’s you pick your state and Metro area to see where you fall within the middle class for you area: [https://www.pewresearch.org/interactives/are-you-in-the-middle-class/](https://www.pewresearch.org/interactives/are-you-in-the-middle-class/)
LCOL Midwest. I make 45k and partner makes 60k. We live frugally and IÔÇÖd consider us easily middle class if not a little above because of how we live.
Is this supposed to be individual income or household income?
[deleted]
Heh. We’re reasonably high middle income for most of the country, but low middle income for where we live. Most people making what we make would choose not to live where we do because they can’t afford it, but we’re comfortable within reason.
According to Pew, I’m middle class for my area, but I also have a ton of student loans and I’m the sole earner in my household, so I don’t feel middle class at all. My income is in the upper 60s, but I’m trying to find a job where I can earn more.
We are in the 120-150K range. My husband is the majority income earner and I will likely be going back to being a SAHM here soon by choice. We live frugally (mortgage is less than $800, save for our wants, retirement and college funds are first priority). We also have 3 kids and live in a higher cost of living area (the Pacific NW… we lucked out with our home and then refinanced when we had a good chunk paid off). I consider us middle class because we can afford most wants, all our needs, but we have to carefully budget and donÔÇÖt live extravagantly. I donÔÇÖt know how people making what we do have 500K homes but I know everyone has different priorities and housing costs.
I feel 100% middle class but according to all numbers I am at least upper middle class. I live in a HCOL area in New England.
I make 60k and my wife makes 30k. We live in upstate New York. I consider us to be lower middle class. We aren’t hurting for money but we still have to watch spending from time to time.
135k combined in The upper Midwest, me 65k wife 70k. We are probably upper middle. We have a good budget and plan, save at least 20% gross per year for retirement, donÔÇÖt want for anything and are pretty comfortable
About 50k a year IÔÇÖm a homeowner so thatÔÇÖs a start
Single, 48k in medium COL area. Doing well except for the fact that I probably wonÔÇÖt be able to afford a house unless I move. IÔÇÖm probably considered lower-middle because of that.
I make 80k and my wife makes 50k. We live in the midwest. I see myself as middle class, but I also understand my cities average household income is 48k.
I’m also aware my wage would be “getting by” in some HCOL areas.
I would say we live a very middle class lifestyle and drive middle class vehicles. We do put 40-60k a year in investment accounts though. So more of a mindset.
My annual salary right now is $53kish, but I get some special checks and with my (very) small side business, I probably barely make $60k, if that.
I live in a rather HCOL area – Long Island, NY. Property taxes are absolutely insane. I feel like… lower middle class here, even with a “decent” civil service job. My wife makes $40k at her new job, so in total we make at or slightly under $100k.
We are buying a home (finally) after years of saving and paying down debt. I was able to save about 20% (we also got some gifts), which it would be impossible to buy otherwise. Our home is less than $350k, so it’s a very small 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom ranch. “Normal” homes can be around $500k + astronomical property taxes.
What kills me the most about living here is that no one does anything about the property taxes, most of which are school taxes. Of my projected $7k taxes (we chose the house for very low taxes), like $4.5k-$5k is school taxes only. Yet the budgets are approved every year for the most part. People got passed when President Trump capped the SALT dedications at $10k, but in my mind shouldn’t people be mad that the taxes are so high in the first place?
I don’t know if I’m considered middle class because I don’t make 6 digits in the Bay Area, but I think I’m middle class in the rest of the country.
I have an upper class income, but I didnÔÇÖt get a real job until age 30, so I feel like IÔÇÖm trying to play catch up. Trying to catch up on retirement and buying a house means my take home pay is much more in the middle class range.
Also, day care is so damned expensive.
Seattle-ish (Tacoma).
Combined income is now at 200K with me at about 130K and my wife at about 70K. 1500 square foot house on a 5000 square foot lot. No kids.
If the stats are to believed that the median household income here is 58K (although thatÔÇÖs likely going to continue trending upward due to folks getting priced out of Seattle and moving down here with a quickness), IÔÇÖd definitely consider us middle class or even ÔÇ£middle class comfortable,ÔÇØ is that makes sense. We donÔÇÖt really think about bills or money because we donÔÇÖt have toÔÇöitÔÇÖs autodrafted every month, including generous autodraft transfers each month for various savings and investment accounts. IÔÇÖd say weÔÇÖre doing pretty well for a couple in their late 20ÔÇÖs.
Yes I feel I am middle class but I try to be frugal and mindful on my spending. If I can get a quality item I need for a discount that is my overall goal. I try to save 30 percent of my income each year. Sometimes I meet my goal and sometimes I don’t. I don’t drive fancy cars or live in an expensive home. My kids attend one of the best public schools where I live. I try to get scholarships whenever possible. I try to DIY when I can but sometimes you need an expert. Our vacations have been at a discount. I use airline miles and hotel points whenever possible. Our room at disney was 30 percent off and I bought park tickets through a discounter. We used airline miles for the airfare. With Covid we have not really gone anywhere or done anything. My kids sled, go to the park, swim at the public beach, and ride bikes. On valentines day you can get free coffee drinks so we did that. I try to sign up for any rewards I can if it makes sense. We go to Costco for gas. I feel the membership pays for itself. I had to buy a new car battery and it was 40 dollars less at costco. I try to combine trips to save on gas. I did splurge for my birthday and bought new dishes at kohl’s that were 50 percent off. It has been 14 years since I had new ones. We don’t eat a lot of meat but again I try to get it on sale if we are eating it
Beef was buy one get one half off this weekend so we have 2 nice roasts to make. Generic items are usually pretty good unless it’s mayo, ketchup, or mac n cheese. Those three things I’m picky about. I don’t keep my thermostat at freezing in winter and super warm in summer. I like being comfortable in my home. I use my library and my amazon prime to the extreme.
I feel middle class but after plugging my info I’m upper end of middle class for (ventura county) California. But my mindset is still frugal.
Definitely not middle class but trying to be
60-90k and hell no
$150k household income in Las Vegas. According to the Pew calculator we are considered in the top 16% of income earners, however our frugality gives us the mindset that we are middle class. We both grew up extremely poor as well.
I make 135K and live in a L-MCOL area. I max 401k and roth, then 1K a month into savings. Wife studying to be a nurse, then either NP or CRNA. We are upper middle class until she’s done, or my parents die and leave me all their money…won’t happen for 20 years after they’ve blown it all in retirement. Tbh I would prefer them being around for another 20 tho.
I make just under 60k, but my husband gets loans for school so our “salary” is probably closer to 65k.
I feel pretty middle class. We live in a nicer apartment and can take a vacation once a year. But we still follow a budget and have to keep ourselves in check with eating out and other frivolous spending.
Edit: I just used the link that u/ChocoCat7675 posted and it put us as distinctly middle class for our area, using just my salary as well as my salary + his loans.
2019 was our best year and we thankfully had a decent buffer in our savings account. 2020 was hard because both of our jobs are in entertainment/tourism in a tourism based city. We earned about a third of our 2019 income in 2020 and that was primarily because I qualified for UI.
We went from solidly middle class for our area to straddling the line of lower and middle class income. While we aren’t looking at eviction or food shortages, we also don’t have any savings left. Once our city reopens and jobs come back, I believe it will still take another two years before we can get back to our prior earning potential.
According to that link below I fall into the Middle Class for my county but it doesn’t really feel like it.
We make 50k in a LCOL area. House was super cheap and is almost paid off. No debt so we can enjoy life and travel on our income. We won’t have a robust retirement and will always draw a check from our small biz so I guess that would make us lower middle class. Definitely won’t be going on world cruises and buying vacation homes but not in danger of homelessness or eating cat food either.
