AI Legalese Decoder Can Help with Your Traffic Citation
On a recent trip down the interstate, I encountered a situation that led to my receiving a traffic citation, and I am in need of some assistance deciphering my options. I found myself being tailgated by a truck on the highway, and in an effort to escape this dangerous situation, I attempted to accelerate in order to merge into the right lane and put some distance between myself and the offending vehicle. However, as I was executing this maneuver, I inadvertently caught the attention of a police officer who was positioned near a roadside opening, and I was subsequently pulled over.
The officer who stopped me was understanding of the circumstances, but I still found myself being issued a citation for exceeding the speed limit by 9 mph, clocking in at 79 mph in a 70 mph zone. Given that this is my first brush with the law in this regard, I believe that I have a compelling case to present in support of my decision to exceed the speed limit in that particular instance. However, I would appreciate some input from others on whether it might be worth my while to contest the citation in court.
I have also been informed that there may be an opportunity for me to have the citation expunged from my record by participating in a brief driving class or other similar program. I am particularly interested in exploring this avenue, especially given my age of 17 and the fact that this incident took place in Utah.

You won’t get out of it with that story. You just admitted that you are 100% guilty.
The story you should bring to the judge is that you are young, a new driver, made a mistake and are asking to be forgiven. Explain what you learned from this experience, how you drive differently because of it, and how you are now very careful to follow the speed limit. The last thing you should do in front of a judge is even indirectly suggest that your speeding was justified – maybe it was but thatÔÇÖs not the way the judge will see it. The judge will see such a suggestion as a 17 year old looking for a license to speed.
Your ticket is for 9 over, how fast were you actually going because I’d bet money the cop gave you a break writing your for 9 over already b/c 10 over or more is a different fine and/or points. I know a lot of cops, none of them stops a car for less than 12 over unless there’s a compelling reason to do so other than the speed. The cop can change your ticket to the actual number if you contest it, he probably wrote it on the ticket somewhere if it’s a paper ticket. You have every right to fight it, if you’re going to do so, be very polite, wear a suit if you have one, they’ll probably do something for you, maybe 5 over or something like failure to obey a traffic control device that’s usually just a fine and nothing on your record.
Not sure how Utah works but in Wisconsin theyÔÇÖll sometimes change the ticket to something lesser if you appear in person like ÔÇ£improper signal, or ÔÇ£improper lane deviationÔÇØ with a similar or sometimes increased fine. That way you donÔÇÖt have a speeding ticket on your record and they still get their money, which is really what they care about. ItÔÇÖs worth fighting it for sure
If you received a ticket for 9 over the speed limit, IÔÇÖm guessing you admitted to going 9 over the speed limit to officer who pulled you over. His chill demeanor is what got you the ticket because it kept you talking long enough to admit guilt. The ticket is a lock in court unless the judge wants to throw some mercy your way. Your best lesson to learn from this is never answer any question you are not legally required to answer during a traffic stop (examples ÔÇ£where coming from?ÔÇØ, ÔÇ£do you know how fast you were driving?ÔÇØ) as they can and will be used against you. ItÔÇÖs not just a TV trope that the first thing a halfway competent lawyer says is ÔÇ£stop talkingÔÇØ. As others have said going in front of the judge admitting you have learned a valuable lesson and will take this lesson into the rest of your driving life is probably your best bet here.
Former Police Officer. Each court in UT decides on availability but you should be eligible for traffic school. You can contact the court clerk or check the court website for details.
Basically, you will pay a fine plus the school fee (about $65) and if you complete the class, which is online and pretty simple, the court will change the violation type from speeding to a non-moving violation. So, no points on your license and no increase on your insurance.
Going back to your original question, no, the reason for speeding is not valid and the court is not going to clear it based on your “reason”. So do the traffic school, pay the fees and move on.
9 mph is over the limit. The limit of 70 is the fastest you can go. Challenging it is 50:50 depending on the judge. Go to court and find out if you can do traffic school.
Yeah…you’re probably not going to get out of this ticket unless you get a Lawyer that successfully argues your case. Even then, there’s no guarantee you won’t get points on your license.
In my state of you just pay the ticket it goes under nolo contesto and you get no points on your license.
If you go to court they can convict you. Then you pay the five and get points.
Even if you were going 71 in a 70 it’s still a violation. Just pay the fine.
